Bus Driver
Reports to: Transportation Coordinator
Department: Operations O-08
SUMMARY: The Bus Driver will operate a variety of vehicles to safely transport clients to and from various programs/locations of Work Training Center. Drivers will assist with the loading and unloading of van/bus passengers and serve as the interoffice courier between WTC locations. Bus Drivers will assist drivers with clients and with loading and unloading passengers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Safely operates a variety of vans/busses, adhering to all traffic laws and the guidelines and regulations outlined in the WTC Vehicle Handbook.
- Loads and unloads or assists in the loading and unloading of clients, either manually or with the use of mechanical lifting devices.
- Transports clients over required route(s) to proper destination(s).
- Adheres to established routes and times, adjusting as necessary when clients are added or removed from delivery schedule.
- Performs DMV required pre-trip inspection. Reports any maintenance malfunctions to Transportation Coordinator.
- Make independent judgements, within stated objectives and guidelines, regarding unusual traffic/road conditions, and the proper course of action to take.
- Deals effectively with client needs, supervising clients entering, leaving, and while being transported on assigned routes.
- Responsible for timely and accurate reports, including daily mileage, attendance, safety checks, defect reports and incident reports as required.
- Effectively deals with parents, care-providers, and the community, in a positive manner.
- Keeps immediate Coordinator promptly and fully informed of all problems or unusual matters of significance and takes prompt corrective action where necessary.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
- Ability to attend monthly driver’s meetings and/or seminars, classes or other training pertaining to the development of driving and safety skills.
- Responsible for the pick-up and delivery of interoffice mail between various WTC operating locations served by bus route.
- Presents a uniformly positive image of WTC programs and services during all informal community contacts as well as during regular workday activities.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as required or requested by the Transportation Coordinator, Operations Manager, and Director of Client Services.

- Employee is regularly required to stand, walk; bend; lift; twist; use hands; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and see and hear and communicate with sufficient acuity to successfully perform all aspects of the job.
- Employee may be required to work/drive in an environment that includes inclement weather and extreme heat and/or cold.
- Ability to safely lift and/or carry 50 pounds and the ability to safely assist passengers on and off a variety of vans/busses.
- Ability to drive varied distances daily and frequent sitting for long periods of time.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required to successfully perform this job.
- Minimum of a high school education with the experience, knowledge, and/or skills to safely operate a passenger van/bus.
- Ability to work with persons with disabilities.
- Preferred experience transporting and/or working with persons with disabilities.
- Commitment to the Work Training Center and its mission and the ability to work as a team member and represent Transportation and the Operations Department in a professional manner.
- Ability and willingness to work a varied schedule, as required.
- Adherence to established dress standards and willingness to wear issued uniform and appropriate safety protective equipment.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
- Currently have a California Class ‘B’ Passenger endorsed Driver’s License with California Special Driver Certificate – VDDP endorsement.
- Must meet Department of Transportation physical and medical requirements and pass substance abuse screening, and as a safety sensitive employee, be subject to random substance abuse screening under Work Training Center policy.
- Must be twenty-one (21) years of age or older.
- Must be insurable by Work Training Center’s insurance carrier.
- Previous experience transporting and/or working with persons with disabilities.
- Current First Aid and CPR certificate or the ability to obtain certification.
- A fingerprint clearance from the Department of Justice and/or FBI
