Job Summary
Under general supervision, the Building Inspector conducts building, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical inspections to promote the safety of Scott County citizens and visitors.
Job Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Performs plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and building inspections.
Makes field inspections of new, remodeled and repaired commercial, industrial and residential buildings: enforces code and ordinance provisions; checks survey stakes to see if excavation is in the proper place; inspects structural work for conformity with submitted plans; approves condition of buildings before they are moved; makes final inspections prior to use. Performs building plans review.
Investigates and resolves complaints, including zoning; submits inspection reports for office records.
May perform various duties in the building inspection office: makes telephone contacts with contractor or owners; answers questions concerning building code requirements.
Attends required training to maintain certifications.
Demonstrates the ability to exemplify, by his/her actions, the County PRIDE philosophy.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Standards For Initial Consideration
Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines:
High school diploma or GED equivalent; AND five (5) years of experience in a building trade or inspections; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Knowledge of:
Methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in plumbing, electrical, mechanical and building trades.
Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
Scott County adopted zoning ordinances.
Scott County roads and geography.
Work safety policies, procedures, and practices.
Skill in:
Reading and interpreting plans specifications and blueprints of ordinary complexity and to compare them with construction in process. Performing thorough inspections and identifying code violations.
Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with contractors, property owners, government officials, and the general public.
Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
Supplemental Information
License and Certification Requirements
Must be a certified International Code Council (ICC) Building Inspector (or obtain such certification within one (1) year of employment).
Must be an Iowa State certified Electrical Inspector and/or certified Mechanical Inspector (or obtain such certification within one (1) year of employment).
Must possess a valid Driver's license.
Physical Demands and Working Environment:
Work is performed in a standard office environment and in the field at various construction sites. While in the field, may be exposed to dangerous tools, equipment, and machinery, extreme weather conditions, potential physical harm from construction sites or unsafe building conditions, and hazardous chemicals. May be required to climb ladders, work in tight spaces, climb stairs, and traverse uneven surfaces.
