Overview
The City of Louisville invites professional, motivated individuals to apply for our Building Inspector I or IIposition. The successful candidate will be hired at the level dependent on their qualifications. Building Inspector's progress through a career ladder with increasing responsibilities and compensation as they obtain additional experience and certifications.
This will be a limited term position to last up to two years with the option to extend the position as needed.
Under the general supervision of the Chief Building Official, the Building Inspector performs a variety of specialized tasks to enforce the City building codes. The Building Inspector performs technical work in the inspection of new and existing buildings and structures to ensure conformance to building and zoning laws and approved plans, specifications, and standards. A person in this position exercises considerable independent decision making while working in the field. Work is reviewed through observation, conferences, reports, and results obtained. Performs other work as required.
This job posting is for one position within the Department of Building and Safety for the City of Louisville. The pay rate in the posting reflects the minimum for an Inspector I and the maximum for an Inspector II. Please see the ranges below for ranges for each level.
Pay Range:Hiring Range:
Building Inspector I - $58,427 - $78,853 $58,427 - $68,640
Building Inspector II - $63,086 - $85,176 $63,086 - $74,152

Examples of Duties
  • Inspects residential, commercial and industrial buildings during and after construction to ensure compliance with approved plans and specifications under the City's codes and ordinances by performing on-site inspections of primarily electrical installations, as well as foundations, framing, plumbing, mechanical work and other inspections as assigned
  • Identifies code violations; issues correction notices and stop work orders under the approval of the Chief Building Official
  • Reads and interprets electrical construction drawings and blueprints to ensure that specifications meet building codes
  • Reviews building permit applications and answers questions regarding zoning and building ordinances, and enforces City ordinances regarding contractors' licenses
  • Prepares special reports and maintains activity records
  • Reviews Building Plans
  • Supports the Building Safety Team when necessary in covering the counter and processing permits
  • Other duties as assigned
This position is considered a critical/essential worker and is therefore responsible for responding to emergencies and/or disasters that may require additional overtime or adjustments to your normal schedule to fit the needs of the organization.
General Qualifications
Building Inspector I:
Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent. Experience as an inspector for a governmental agency, or supervisory level position in the building and construction trades; or any equivalent combination of acceptable training, education, and experience as deemed appropriate by the City of Louisville
Building Inspector II:
Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent. A minimum of 3 ICC certifications as a Building Inspector. Preferred but not required to have a Colorado Licensed Master Electrician or Colorado Licensed Journeyman Electrician supervisory level position in the building and construction trades; or any equivalent combination of acceptable training, education, and experience as deemed appropriate by the City of Louisville.
Additional Information
  • Considerable knowledge of ICC building, plumbing, and mechanical construction codes.
  • Knowledge of City zoning ordinances, and construction code requirements.
  • Knowledge of modern practices in building, mechanical, plumbing, and construction work.
  • Knowledge of modern practices and methods employed in building inspections.
  • Knowledge of safe building and inspection procedures.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting construction drawings and specifications.
  • Skill in applying knowledge of building codes, zoning, and land use applications.
  • Skill in the use of a personal computer and applicable programs.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work effectively with others and maintain positive relationships.
  • Ability to learn the geography of the City.
  • Ability to fairly and impartially interpret and enforce the appropriate City codes.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The noise level in the work environment can range from low to very loud. Work is performed at construction sites as well as in an office environment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee may occasionally work near moving mechanical equipment, and may be required to climb a ladder or scaffolding. The employee is exposed to some risk of electrical shock and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, bend, crawl, or crouch, while performing essential functions of the job. The employee is regularly required to sit, use hands, fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, and speak, talk and hear.
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
OTHER NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS:
Successful candidates will be required to complete a pre-placement physical prior to employment. A background investigation will be performed on qualified candidates.
