YOU will conduct routine and complex inspections of new construction, alteration, and repairs of commercial, industrial, one and two family dwellings, and other structures to assure compliance with the International Building & Residential Code and the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code and related rules and regulations.Performs routine and complex inspections of new construction, alteration, and repairs of buildings and other structures. Performs footing, foundation, framing, insulation, and final inspections. Inspects commercial, residential, and industrial buildings to determine whether materials used meet code compliance.
Inspects footings for new structures; inspects foundations for compliance with joist spacing, anchor bolts, vents, and access. Inspects buildings for wall, under floor, and ceiling requirements. Inspects structures where a fire has occurred, determining the extent of damage and the condition of structure. Makes special surveys of places of assembly to determine compliance with governing laws and ordinances.
Prepares daily reports of inspections. Logs all inspections on a daily basis and notifies contractors of any code violations. Submits reports of violations and issues written or verbal orders for correction of same. Makes re-inspection of premises to determine correction of violations.
Assists with training classes for Inspector trainees in the proper methods and procedures of building structural inspection. Conducts cross-training classes for other inspectors (i.e., electrical inspector, codes compliance inspector, plumbing and mechanical inspector). Teaches other inspectors the proper techniques of Building Structural Code enforcement.
Coordinates with other inspectors to ensure that all inspection requirements are met prior to the issuance of the Certificate of Occupancy (OC) or a final inspection.
Checks setbacks for new structures/additions prior to pouring footings as required.
Perform other related duties as required.MINIMUM Qualifications for a Building Inspector I:
Graduation from high school or successful completion of the GED; preferably supplemented by an Associate's degree in Architecture, Building Construction Technology, or related field of study.
Minimum of one (1) years direct work experience at the Building Inspector level or some experience in building construction, maintenance, or repair. Within eighteen (18) months of the date of employment, must obtain a Building Inspector One & Two Family certification in accordance with the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (VDHCD). General knowledge of the methods, materials, and techniques of the building trade at an apprentice level; general knowledge of building code regulations pertaining to building construction. Ability to read plans and specifications and recognize deviations from such plans in the field where work is in process.
Must possess a valid driver's license and must have a satisfactory driver's record based on the City of Hampton's criteria. Any person offered employment in this position shall be required to successfully pass testing for controlled substances and a criminal background check prior to any offer of employment.
MINIMUM Qualifications for a Building Inspector II:
Graduation from high school or successful completion of the GED; preferably supplemented by an Associate's degree in Architecture, Building Construction Technology, or related field of study.
Minimum of three (3) years direct experience at the Building Inspector level or considerable experience in building construction, maintenance, or repair.
Must possess a Building Inspector One & Two Family certification in accordance with the requirements of the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Housing and Community (VDHCD).
Must possess or obtain within three (3) years of the date of employment, a Building Inspector General certification in accordance with the requirements of the VDHCD.
Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, and techniques of the building trade at the apprentice and/or journeyman level; considerable knowledge of building code regulations pertaining to building construction. Ability to read plans and specifications and recognize deviations from such plans in the field where work is in process; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with contractors; property owners, and the general public.
Must possess a valid driver's license and must have a satisfactory driver's record based on the City of Hampton's criteria. Any person offered employment in this position shall be required to successfully pass testing for controlled substances and a criminal background check prior to ay offer of employment.Performs duties under the general supervision of the Inspection Services Manager or designee who provides guidance, advice, and assistance when necessary. Requires ability to work independently, making judgments and decisions in the line of the enforcement of building structural codes. Extensive contact with contractors, property owners and the general public. Requires walking, climbing and crawling under houses, ascending multi-story buildings in a semi-finished state, etc., to accomplish inspections. May be required to provide assistance to the Emergency Operations Damage Assessment Team in times of disaster. This is a non-exempt position.Employment Type: Full-Time Permanent
