TERM Employee


$20.00 to $27.00 hourly DOE

Job Summary

The BSW Operator will be responsible for completion of BSW installations - including hand digging, equipment operation, placing, traffic control and locates, permitting, safety, customer communication. Performs clean-up/restoration and various non-technical functions associated with all types of construction and installation projects. The BSW Operator will also be responsible for administrative duties including review of current workload, reporting completions, permitting requirements, restoration requirements, driving a company vehicle with trailer and equipment, ability to work alone or as a team with laborers to meet workload requirements, and will be responsible for locate activities – reading maps and service requests, measuring, white-lining, and painting of the company locates, create locate tickets and managing the relationship with locate vendors to ensure timely and accurate completions to meet customer due dates.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Essential Duties and Responsibilities listed below are a range of duties performed by the employee and not intended to reflect all duties performed.


· Ensure proper work area protection including, placement of traffic control devices that meet Local and State requirements.

· Control of vehicular and/or pedestrian traffic within a “Work Area”.

· Work Area Protection - Direct the flow of traffic to ensure the safety of Employees and the general public.

· Read service requests and interpret maps

· Operation of company vehicle, driving vehicle with trailer, loading trailer

· Operate equipment to place fiber drop to company standard. Including digging, pushing/pulling/terminating/testing fiber cable, sweeping, raking, backfilling, lifting, loading/unloading equipment.

· Splice fiber drops and ensure continuity end-to-end.

· Determine most efficient path for drop placement, measure path, operate locate equipment, sketch asbuilt, pothole existing utilities, conduct administrative duties as required.

· Determine and communicate required permits to manager.

· Communicate and manage hard/soft surface restoration.

· Ensure completion of job – including placing fiber, continuity of light, and restoration to customer satisfaction and company standard.

· Interfaces with property owners, customers, city officials/inspectors at job sites.

· Follows all appropriate laws, Company policies and procedures.

· Use Laptop PC equipment.

· Utilize safety protection equipment appropriate for position – ear plugs, hard hat, safety glasses, vest, footwear, etc.

· Wear uniformed company clothing

· May be required to perform additional duties and tasks as required by the Company.


Qualifications:

· 5+ years of safely operating equipment such as vibratory plow, locators, direction drill, backhoe, splicing equipment.

· Read, write, and speak English.

· Good communication skills – communicates with customers, co-workers, inspectors, and management.

· Understanding of telecom infrastructure – terminals, network demarc location

· Add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers.

· Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and safe driving record.

· Ability to drive truck with trailer and equipment. Including forward and backing trailer without assistance.

· Understanding of fiber cable tolerances and ability to use fiber tools such as red light for continuity.

· Interpret test results

· Able to operate utility locating equipment – locator, measuring wheel, spray paint.

· Possess manual dexterity and able to work with hand tools.

· Ability to work independently and apply sound judgment and reasoning skills to a variety of situations

· Ability to multi-task and collaborate effectively with other personnel to meet deadlines.

· Strong verbal and written communication, attention to detail, and organizational skills.

· Ability to adjust to rapidly changing priorities and schedules.

· Ability to provide excellent customer service.

Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, digging, lifting, sitting, walking, or standing for prolonged periods of time; most of the time will be spent outdoors working with equipment in a labor capacity, with hand tools, machinery and surrounded by loud noises. The employee must be able to lift, carry, and/or move up to 100 pounds.


Work Environment

Primary work will be in the field, including in vehicle and outside in the elements – wind, rain, snow, sun, and varying temperatures and conditions. Some work will be indoors to gather materials and minimal administrative work at a desk.
