Summary
The Road Services Division, Bridge Unit is currently recruiting for a Term-Limited Temporary (TLT) / Special Duty Assignment Engineer IIposition that is expected to last through May 2025. We are looking for applicants that have sound structure engineering background and can perform structural designs and communicate and coordinate project designs for bridges, walls, culverts, and general roadway infrastructures.
The King County Road Services Division designs, builds, operates, and maintains roads and bridges in unincorporated areas of King County. The division is committed to ensuring the county's transportation system is safe and efficient for all uses and modes of travel. The Division is responsible for 1,500 miles of road, 182 bridges, and many retaining walls and culverts in unincorporated King County.
Job Duties
The Bridge Engineer (Engineer II) position will support the Bridge & Structural Design Unit with work involving structural designs, bridge load ratings, bridge load upgrades, bridge rehabilitations and repairs, shop drawing review approvals, and construction supports. The Engineer II position will perform complex structural designs and analysis and prepare plans, specifications, and cost estimates for bridges, walls, culverts, and roadway infrastructures under the guidance and direction of a Senior Bridge Engineer. Duties may include:
  • Assist Project Manager coordination for specific task from inception to construction,
  • Prepare designs, plans, specifications, and costs estimates (PS&E) for bridges, walls, and roadway related infrastructures,
  • Assist complex structural designs and analysis,
  • Assist or prepare structure condition assessment, feasibility, and various design reports,
  • Perform bridge load rating analysis and review and issue overload truck permit,
  • Assist or prepare designs and PS&E construction documents for project involving bridge replacement, load upgrade, repair, rehabilitation, re-decking, seismic retrofit, painting, bridge widening, and bridge rail upgrade, etc.
  • Perform Q/C reviews of structure designs, reports, and plans, specs, and estimates prepared by others,
  • Perform research and assessment on new material and structural design tools or technologies,
  • Review and approve shop drawings, shoring plans, and design calculation prepared by contractor,
  • Perform bridge inspections and prepare inspection finding reports and inventories,
  • Coordinate a multidisciplinary team from design through the successful construction of road/bridge projects and facilitate team communication, goals, and efforts
  • Coordinate with project team members, other division staff, consultants, management, regulatory agencies, utility companies, and the public to resolve project issues
  • Other duties as assigned

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) Education OR an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates one's knowledge of engineering principles
  • Experience in preparation or review of engineer's plans, specifications, cost estimate and technical documents
  • Demonstrated experience contributing to a work environment that embraces and encourages diversity in its workforce and where differences are valued
  • Understanding of basic structural analysis principles and load path on bridges, structures, and components,
  • Familiar with AASHTO LRFD, IBC, ACI, Manual of Steel Construction LFRD, PCI, AASHTO MBE, WSDOT BDM
  • Knowledge in project management techniques and principles to include budget, scope and schedule development and monitoring
  • Skill in problem solving and conflict resolution
  • Ability to collaborate, work, and make decisions in a team environment
  • Experience effectively managing multiple projects and priorities with competed deadlines and changing priorities
  • Experience working efficiently to support project team and meeting project's goal
  • Ability to perform under fast track and urgent tasks
  • Experience performing field evaluation / review and provide recommendations
  • Skill in using Microsoft Office software such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Project and Bluebeam
  • Skill using AutoCAD, GPS, GIS programs
  • Ability to work with diverse individuals and customers and maintaining effective relationships
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing reports
  • Ability to research and interpret applicable design codes & manuals, policies, and regulations
  • Demonstrates behaviors that include fairness, respect, and inclusiveness
  • Ability to collaborate work with others and can follow direction from supervisor or manager.

  • Skill in bridge and general structural designs
  • Ability to have predictable and reliable attendance
  • Can collaborate and communicate with others and project progress and issues
  • Is accountable for timely and quality result delivery of assigned work duties,
  • EIT preferred

  • The typical work schedule for this position is 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday - Friday with 30 minutes lunch. This position is overtime eligible.

TEMPORARY TELECOMMUTING REQUIREMENTThe work associated with this position will be performed through a combination of teleworking complemented with onsite work and meetings as needed. Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements. The individual in this position will be meeting with community members and organizations and will be expected to engage in face-to-face interactions, as COVID-19 restrictions permit, throughout unincorporated King County.
Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection (access may be supplemented in some situations) where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions may be required, including the wearing of masks in some situations.
