Job description

Our internship program

You'll join us for a full-time, competitively paid internship for the summer of 2024. You'll work with a small team of engineers to implement real features used by our readers, authors, and publishers, and you'll take on big challenges and collaborate across the company to ship complete, end-to-end solutions. (We think it's important to have the best tools to be productive, so you'll have your choice of laptop, monitor, and other equipment provided by us to set up your workspace.) Our engineering team is organized into small cross-functional teams that are deeply focused on one product or initiative. Teams are empowered to make product and technology decisions and quickly build the best solutions for our readers, publishers, and authors. We lean heavily on automation, good test coverage, and continuous deployment to ensure we're constantly getting rapid feedback from our users, and we follow the approach of starting small, shipping often, and deferring unnecessary complexity. We believe that we build better products when our teammates have a variety of perspectives and experiences, so we care a lot about creating a diverse, supportive, and inclusive environment.

Our internship program is intended to help you learn and grow. Our goal is that you end the internship feeling prepared to write code independently in a production environment. We recognize that not everyone who might be a great intern is at that goal right now, and we're excited to work with you on that journey and help you develop the skills and confidence needed to take on a full time Software Engineering role at any company.

During your internship, you will:
  • Receive one-on-one mentorship and training from experienced engineers who are dedicated to
  • helping you grow quickly
  • Have opportunities to connect with other junior engineers and with former interns and co-ops
  • (including Hack alumni!) who are now full-time team members to learn from their experiences
  • Engage in many deep technical discussions with friendly and talented engineers
  • Ship code to production regularly via our continuous deployment pipeline
  • Use automated tests and monitoring to ensure code works as expected and runs correctly in
  • production
  • Work on real features in high scale systems used by millions of people
  • Complete your internship with the skills and experience to be a professional software engineer
  • Learn about and use some of the languages, tools, frameworks we use including React, Ruby on Rails, AWS, and Clojure

Remote work flexibility

Location: Boston

Our team has choose-where-you-work flexibility that allows you to choose a predominantly remote, hybrid, or in-office setup at our office in Cambridge, Massachusetts. We'll help each team member figure out the work set up that's best for them, including WFH equipment or a dedicated desk space in our office. Most of our teams currently operate with a hybrid model, with some people working full- or part-time from the office, and some from home. We value and prioritize collaboration across mediums and spaces, and we invest in ensuring that meetings and other forms of collaboration are set up with equal access regardless of where you work.

Your interview experience

Our goal is to get to know you in a low-pressure, friendly environment - and to give you ample opportunity to learn more about us, too. We will always do what we can to be flexible around your personal time commitments, deadlines, and general availability. Pubmark strives to be an inclusive workplace and we value learning from different perspectives. We seek to foster an environment filled with people from a wide variety of backgrounds, experiences, abilities, and perspectives. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity, or veteran status. We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer. Finally, our goal is to create an environment where you can interview at your best. If we can provide any assistance or accommodations during your time with us, please let us know at accommodations@bookbub.com. All requests are treated as privately as possible and have no impact on candidate eligibility.
