JOB PURPOSE:
Boiler Operators are assigned to the Facilities Department and reports directly to the Boiler Watch Supervisor. This position is responsible for controlling and maintaining in a safe and clean environment the operation of high-pressure steam boilers that provide heating and domestic hot water needs within the Seminary campus buildings and homes.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Operates boilers on a seasonal heating rotating 8-hour shifts; which includes weekends and holidays during the following hours:
September to May
12:00 AM to 8:00 AM
8:00 AM to 4:00 PM
4:00 PM to 12:00 AM
May to September
7:00 AM to 3:30 PM Monday through Friday

Observe and interpret readings on gauges, meters, charts and screens
Registering various aspects of boiler operation to ensure that boilers are operating properly
Audibly interpret operation through sounds, and actions of the plant
Chemical Tests 5%
Perform daily chemical tests on boiler water system to assure water quality for proper operation.
Cleaning and annual inspections 9%
Overhauls and inspects each boiler during the summer shut down period
Cleans and lubricates boilers and auxiliary equipment
Keeps entire plant neat and clean
Communication 5%
Communicate with other operators at shift changes of any events or issues that may have occurred during their shift
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and supervisors.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:
· Ability to work additional hours when required or assigned
· Actively participates in meetings and training sessions which may occur outside of normally scheduled shifts when needed
QUALIFICATIONS
CREDENTIALS REQUIRED:
· Must be a certified New Jersey state licensed Boiler Operator, minimum of a high-pressure black seal. High pressure blue preferred.
· High school diploma or equivalent
· 3-5 years working experience in similar steam plant operation
· Must demonstrate initiative and ability to work with little supervision
· Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license
· Willingness to report for duty during emergencies, weather related events or to cover shifts under short notice to ensure adequate staffing to operate the plant
· Ability to remain focused and alert at all times, without distraction, during work shift
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
· Must be willing to work rotating shift work
· Knowledge of plant controls, tools equipment and proper procedures to maintain the steam plant and the ability to operate all the equipment and machinery within the plant
PHYSICAL / ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
· Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and exhibit the dexterity to work in awkward positions
· The ability to lift, pull, push or work on uneven surfaces for an extended period of time
· Ability to extend arms overhead performing duties while standing, stooping, twisting, bending, kneeling or from a prone position
· Ability to climb a ladder up to 20 feet
· Ability to work in abnormal conditions, overheated and noisy areas
· Ability to practice safety protocols when required
