Animal care / programming interns provide basic husbandry for the park's exhibit animals and provide educational programs to a variety of groups.
- Provide day-to-day care to the park's exhibit animals.
- Participate alongside animal care professionals in more complex area of animal care.
- Develop and deliver species appropriate enrichments and diets.
- Develop and deliver age-appropriate interpretive programs for public, private, and school groups.
- Provide operational support to park ranger staff including grounds and facilities upkeep.
- Provide operational support at special events.
- Provide general clerical support including answering phones and writing reports.
- Interact daily with park visitors to share the story of Bays Mountain Park and promote park programs and events.
- Knowledge of or willingness to learn the principles of biology, ecology, geology, ornithology, herpetology limnology and other natural and earth science.
- Willingness to work in close contact with a variety of animal species.
- Skill in relating well with student groups and general public program participants.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with city staff in other divisions and departments and in the community.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
- Skill in presenting interesting and anecdotal information to the varying groups
Must be at least a sophomore by credit hours at a regionally accredited college or university pursuing a degree in biological/zoological sciences, park administration, recreation, or similar field. Previous experience not required. Candidate must possess a valid TN/VA driver's license.
