The Department: Sales/SBU AME/Turbine Engineering

The Engineer, Blades position supports the mechanical aspects of Vestas wind turbine sales, installation, and maintenance efforts. You will be required to perform complex mechanical engineering assignments with considerable latitude for action and administrating. This role is a blade support engineer and will be primarily focused on blade-related issues and projects. Wind turbine blades include glass and carbon fiber construction with integrated lightning protection.

 

Responsibilities

  • Understand product technology around blade construction and repair and communication with customer's engineers and consultants

  • Respond to technology due diligence requests by customers, consultants, financers, etc. as well as develops and maintains region-specific technical documentation in support of functions (1) and (2)

  • Provide internal failure analysis in support of commercial considerations. Provide forecasts for blade components (affecting service contract costing)

  • Present technology at conferences and generally be a regional technology expert supporting Vestas in front of potential customers

  • Review construction Requests for Information for contractor installation modification requests and provide on-site and in-office support for blade damage evaluation and repair methods

  • Direct communication with customers including assessment of damage from construction/transportation and completes corrective action projects to investigate and resolve failures of blades in Service

  • Respond to technical inquiries from service personnel, project managers, and outside customers as well as conducts studies to assess failure modes and effects (FMEA) and develop time to failure models

  • Coordinates/communicates with Vestas Research & Development as required for ongoing product development and reliability projects

  • Handles testing and inspection work to assist R&D with ongoing improvement testing as well as supports complex Component Improvement Management projects with cross-functional international teams

  • Support Operations with tooling, up-tower repair, and maintenance/inspection expertise

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Material or Mechanical Engineering (other degrees considered with experience) or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering (preference)

  • Experience with glass or carbon fiber design and construction

  • 5 years of experience in engineering with a background in solving problems

  • Solid computer skills, specifically in MS Office products and AutoCAD/ProE

  • Specific experience in the implementation, operation, system standards, and service of wind turbines, experience in project management and systematic problem-solving methodology (8D, DMAIC, etc.), and experience or good knowledge in 2-D and 3-D mechanical modeling (FEA preference)

 

Competencies

  • Ability to work in a time-sensitive setting and organize priorities in an innovative/deadline-oriented environment, professional oral and written communication skills, and solid organizational skills, ability to maintain confidentiality

  • Flexibility working in an innovative and changing organization.

  • Should be a highly motivated and able to work with little supervision as well as have to experience with glass/carbon structural repair (especially on wind turbine blades)
