Job description

SUMMARY

Provide research engineering support for administrative, technical, and practical (hands-on) support of day-to-day operations of a medical research laboratory performing specialized injury orthopedic and biomechanics research with volunteers, human surrogates, and post mortem human subjects (PMHS) in accomplishment of U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory (USAARL) Injury Biomechanics mission.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide technical support for research, analysis, and investigations in supporting design, planning, preparation, execution, and analysis of studies and experimentation, selecting, justification, training, installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting.
  • Work with the Principal (PI) and Associate Investigators (AI) to develop protocol test methodology and support protocol data collection.
  • Provide guidance to research staff on technical questions concerning instrumentation and equipment protocol requirements.
  • Manage instrumentation, equipment, and data acquisition tracking, operation, and maintenance.
  • Train, manages schedules, and recommends workload balance of junior-level technicians and engineers to ensure support to ongoing and upcoming experimentation.
  • Recommends new and improved technical, safety, and procedural methodology or technical capabilities to Group Leadership.
  • Prepare, maintain, calibration, and repair all ATDs, ATD parts, ATD sensors, and mechanical surrogates to ensure availability and functionality for studies.
  • Manage multiple calibration and maintenance tasks and prioritize and execute for completion.
  • Use in-house verification systems to verify performance of as many physical and electronic test assets as possible in-house, in accordance with pre-determine calibration schedule and research study needs.
  • Work with human research volunteers, including all aspects of ensuring volunteer instrumentation use and wear and study execution for data acquisition.
  • Work on human cadaver studies to include all instrumentation and electronic data acquisition aspects of preparation, execution, repair, set-up, and post-execution.
  • Work on human mechanical surrogate studies, including all aspects of developing in-house calibration, ensuring out-of-house calibration, preparation, execution, repair, set-up, and post-execution.
  • Develop new and use pre-existing schematics or senior guidance and industry best practices and standards to execute individually, direct new efforts, or evaluate prior work or ongoing efforts.
  • Connect, ensure pre-test and post-test functionality, identify and troubleshoot issues, and implement repairs for sensors and data acquisition systems for studies.
  • Check the accuracy of various written and electronic documentation records of research and research-support content when content may be self-generated or generated by others.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum eight (8) years of experience in engineering or related field.
  • Related technical education, degrees, certifications, and licenses from state and/or federal accredited programs.
  • Demonstrated experience in basic circuits, wiring, and machine shop fabrication.
  • Experience leading junior level team members.
  • Demonstrated experience within at least 4 of the following research tool groupings: impact and/or shock devices, biomedical imaging and imaging analysis tools (including CT, MRI, and x-rays), high speed imaging and analysis tools, biomedical instrumentation (load cells, accelerometers, etc.), data acquisition equipment, biomechanical research and testing with demonstrated injury biomechanics research; PMHS research and data, and/or with Anthropomorphic Test Devices (ATDs).
  • Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, standards, and procedures of data acquisition, mechanics, electronics, machinery, and instrumentation.
  • Experience or the desire of experience with motion capture and data analysis.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET security clearance (U.S. Citizenship required).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Experience in Post Mortem Human Subjects (PMHS) research, quality assurance and Biosafety Laboratory Level 2 good laboratory practice.
  • Read, understand, and execute techniques and procedures within the quality standards and timelines prescribed by the research plan.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects and initiatives at one time.
  • Strong written communication skills and a solid understanding of Government contracting and the professional services industry.
  • Expert computer skills with advanced knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office Suite software.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and detail oriented.
  • Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness; monitors own work to ensure quality.
  • Proven ability to exercise mature judgment – specifically in recognizing and respecting the confidential nature of corporate and personnel matters.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead junior technicians and engineers in performing laboratory procedures, calibration, repairs, test setup, build-up, maintenance, and other technical and administrative tasks.
