Biology Laboratory Technician
Department: Dean of Science and Engineering
Location: Wellesley Hills

Located in Greater Boston, MassBay is a comprehensive, open-access community college offering associate degrees and certificate programs on three campuses in Wellesley Hills, Framingham, and Ashland, Massachusetts.
Position Summary:
The ideal candidate willjoin a vibrant and inclusive educational community and have a desire andability to work with a diverse population. The full-time Biology LabTechnician- position at MassBay Community College reports directly to the Deanof STEM. This role involves supporting the biotechnology program and serving asan assistant for the Biotech Scholars program. The ideal candidate will have astrong background in Biotechnology/Biomanufacturing or a related field and agenuine passion for working in an inclusive educational community.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
Collaborate with the program's director andprofessor to coordinate and lead teaching assistants in the Biotech PathwayScholars Program:
  • Support faculty as they deliver lectures and conduct laboratory sessions;
  • Guide and assist students during laboratory experiments and Biotech/Biomanufacturing research projects;
  • Assist the faculty in the evaluation and grading of student assignments, quizzes, and exams;
  • Coordinate Teaching Assistant schedules to ensure adequate class coverage;
  • Assist faculty in the development of academic materials;
  • Train Teaching Assistants on learning platforms and communication software;
  • Act as a liaison between students, professors, and the program director, providing support and addressing any issues that arise;
  • Communicate any relevant matters to the administration;
  • Assist with community events;
  • Assist in the development of the Center for Biomanufacturing Education and Workforce Training;
  • Help maintain biotech equipment and coordinate with vendors for equipment-related matters, including operation, upgrades, and training;
  • Coordinate activities with academic and industry Biotech partners, such as communication, meetings, and events (talks, lab tours, visits);
  • Assist in organizing and conducting Biotech/Biomanufacturing research showcases and involvement fairs at the MassBay campus;
  • Maintain the biotech laboratory by organizing, ordering, and cataloging samples;
  • Set up laboratory equipment and monitor inventory and supplies;

AdditionalResponsibilities:
  • Monitor the level of liquid nitrogen in the cell storage tank;
  • Perform routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment;
  • Ensure overall cleanliness of workstations throughout the laboratory;
  • Assist in performing biochemical methodologies, such as HPLC, buffer preparation, and project information analysis;
  • Stay updated on current manufacturing practices and bioprocessing techniques;
  • Perform gene silencing, primer designing, RNA-seq library preparation, deep sequencing, and other related tasks;
  • Assist with the use of advanced equipment, such as bioreactors, HPLC, flow cytometers, FACS, PCR, ddPCR, Ion Chef, Arcturus, and cell analyzers;
  • Help with viral-based drug delivery, potency assays, production, and purification of recombinant proteins, stem cell culture, and flow cytometry;
  • Maintain aseptic environments for biomanufacturing and cell & gene therapy experiments;
  • Assist with cell line development, cell culture expansion, transfection, and production and purification of Biological materials;
  • Maintain and amplify insect cell culture at various scales.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, or closely related field; withone (1) year experience and/or training involving laboratory operations; or anequivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Additional Requirements:
  • Knowledge of molecular biology and Cell & Gene Therapy;
  • Skills in cell culture and recombinant DNA technologies;
  • Knowledge and understanding of Biotechnology, Cell Biology, and Gene Therapy principles and theories. Proficiency in the latest advancements and techniques in the field;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively convey complex scientific concepts to students. Ability to explain concepts clearly and concisely;
  • Ability to oversee and guide other teaching assistants in delivering instructional materials and laboratory sessions;
  • Effective communication and organization skills;
  • Consistent and reliable work habits;
  • Problem-solving skills;
  • Willingness to learn new things;
  • Ability to proofread with accuracy.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Sensitivity and commitment to the goals of Affirmative Action and workforce diversity;
  • Experience working in a diverse environment;
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with underserved students;
  • Prior experience teaching or assisting in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or Cell & Gene Therapy;
  • Experience working in a research laboratory or industry setting related to biotechnology or gene therapy;
  • Up-to-date with the latest research, techniques, and advancements in the field;
  • Experience working with and counseling high school students.

Additional Information:
Salary Range: Salary Range: $45,559-$51,588, in accordance with one's education and experience as dictated by the collective bargainingagreement classification compensation structure.
