Location Details/Description: St. George, Utah.
The St. George Field Office manages public lands in Washington County in the "Three Corners" area where Utah, Arizona, and Nevada meet. The southern region of the Great Basin, and the northern part of the Mojave Desert merge here at Utah's lowest elevation of 2,000-feet above sea level. The field office includes two national conservation areas, 15 wilderness areas and 19 miles of designated wild and scenic rivers.
This field office administers approximately 629,000 surface acres of public land and is located at the convergence of three different ecoregions. The Mojave Desert, Great Basin, and Colorado Plateau are where many native plants and animals have evolved into unique species, some found nowhere else on earth. Important evidence of earth's geologic history and past human cultures is also preserved on public land in Washington County, making this some of the most sensitive land managed by the agency. The Beaver Dam Wash National Conservation Area and the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area are located within the administrative boundaries of the St. George Field Office.

Position Overview:
The BLM St. George Field Office is providing an opportunity for one member to gain hands-on experience in the field of natural resource management by monitoring and managing threatened and endangered plant and wildlife species in Washington County, Utah.
The successful candidate would primarily support the BLM St. George Field Office in surveying plant species listed under the Endangered Species Act. These include dwarf bear poppy, Holmgren milkvetch, Shivwits milkvetch, and two cactus species, Siler's pincushion cactus and Fickeisen's plains cactus. Under the guidance of BLM Staff, the member will assist in botanical data gathering (flower counts, for example), seed collection, and data analysis throughout the season. The candidate may also support BLM staff in a variety of other wildlife management projects.
Examples of specific tasks include:
Those participating in this program will have the opportunity to learn about BLM land-management challenges and responsibilities, gain an understanding of the ins-and-outs of sensitive species monitoring, and get boots on the ground experience with wildlife protection methodologies. This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.
Schedule:: Typically Monday - Friday between the hours of 7am - 4pm MST. Occasional weekend and evening shifts may be necessary for project needs.
Position Benefits
Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $600/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly. The living allowance is a fixed rate determined by the BLM St. George Field Office and ACE and is not flexible.
Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. Housing: Housing is the responsibility of the member and not provided by ACE or BLM St. George Field Office.
Housing Assistance: ACE Members will be eligible for reimbursable housing assistance up to $136 per week. The ACE Member will only be reimbursed for approved and demonstrated housing expenses.
Relocation Assistance: ACE members will have access to up to $500 to be used for eligible relocation expenses. Further details regarding distribution of these funds will be provided during the interview process.
Gear Assistance: ACE members will have up to $213 to spend on eligible gear purchases. For example, eligible gear for this position could be a hiking backpack or a hat. All gear purchases must be approved by ACE staff prior to purchase.
Provided Training/Orientation: ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support. Specific training may include plant and wildlife identification, survey protocols, and habitat assessments. Additional training on developing resumes and applying to federal jobs may be provided.

Environmental Conditions/Hazards: The ACE member(s) may encounter environmental conditions/hazards including extreme heat or cold, rocky terrain, flash floods, swamp or wetland conditions, biting insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife. The member is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow staff/members or resources.
Vehicle and Equipment Use/Safety: If a vehicle is required for the accomplishment of the duties, one will be provided ACE. Any tools required for the accomplishment of the duties will be provided by the BLM St. George Field Office. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), typically provided by the BLM St. George Field Office, will be mandatory for any activity that requires it. Strict adherence to BLM St. George Field Office and ACE equipment training, certification and safety protocols is required.

- Conduct habitat assessments for Mexican spotted owl, Southwestern willow flycatcher, Mojave desert tortoise, and several plant species.
- Conduct 10-m belt transect surveys to locate, photograph, document, and map the spatial distribution of Mojave desert tortoise, their sign, and the location of key habitat features.
- Conduct monitoring protocol and/or survey for two listed cactus species.
- Collecting and cleaning seeds of the above listed plant species.
- Habitat maintenance for listed plant species (including pulling weeds and maintaining plant cages and fences).
- Documenting phenology of listed plants.
- Documenting pollinator activity and insect species.
- Set up and routinely check and maintain motion sensor cameras.
- Assist BLM and UDWR staff in capture of bats and sampling for WNS at Bloomington Cave.

Required:
- Members must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required by U.S. government contracts.
- Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
- Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
- A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
- Willing to undergo and must pass the required two-part criminal history check.
- Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
- ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.

- Competitive applicants for this position can hold or be pursuing a degree in biology, botany, wildlife science, natural resources, ecology, geographic information systems, or related degree.
- Knowledge of plant identification or using dichotomous keys/floras.
- Ability and willingness to work outside in adverse weather conditions (extremely hot weather, long hikes/working in steep terrain, etc).
- Strong desire to work with plants.
- Deep interest in botany, wildlife, or land management.

- Physical Demands: Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, hiking, carrying, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talking and hearing. Manual dexterity required for use of various tools, computer keyboard/mouse and other office equipment. Required to stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch. Ability to hike over rough terrain, and camp overnight under field conditions.
- Vision Requirements: Requires close, distance, peripheral and depth perception vision as well as the ability to focus.
- Weight Lifted or Force Exerted: Frequently moves up to 25 pounds, ability to move up to 50 pounds.
- Environmental: Outdoor and indoor conditions. Work environment conditions can change frequently; working under adverse weather conditions and in various climates.
- Noise Environment: Moderate noise such as in a business office with equipment and light traffic.
