Duties
  • This position serves as a temporary seasonal Biological Science Technician (Plants) for the West Desert District.
  • Record data relating to plant studies.
  • Document occurrence and distribution of identified species.
  • Participate in environmental studies documenting factors affecting plant species and habitat.
  • Lead or conduct field searches for populations of sensitive, threatened or endangered plant species.
  • Photograph, collect and mount plant specimens encountered at different stages of development.
  • Collect ecological site information for population distribution, condition, trend, associated species, geology, soil type and prepare reports.

Qualifications
In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements- please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience.
To qualify at the GS-05 level you must meet the following:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess (1) one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Biological Science Technician (Plants) . Examples of specialized experience may include surveying, mapping and documenting botany species; assisting in performing botany studies; and compiling data obtained through survey/study for review.
OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: Applicants may also use an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Transcripts must be provided with your application packet.
To qualify at the GS-06 level you must meet the following:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess (1) one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Biological Science Technician (Plants). Examples of specialized experience may include surveying, mapping and documenting botany species; surveying for invasive plants; and collecting botany field data and recording the data into established or new databases.
OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have completed (1) one full year of graduate study directly related to the work of the position.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: Applicants may also use an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Transcripts must be provided with your application packet.
To qualify at the GS-07 level you must meet the following:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess (1) one year of specialized work experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Biological Science Technician (Plants). Examples of specialized experience may include surveying, mapping and documenting botany species; researching and compiling botany inventory data; leading or conducting field inventories or studies of botany species and invasive plants; and researching and identifying botany data and compiling data for review in established of new databases.
OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have completed (1) one full year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: Applicants may also use an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Transcripts must be provided with your application packet.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: Work requires some physical exertion such as bending and walking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous and densely vegetated. Required to lift and carry equipment necessary to efficiently perform the work of the position, and to provide for personal comfort and safety. This can include tools, personal protective equipment, food and water for extended periods of work away from vehicles.
Work Environment: Office work is performed in a setting that is adequately lighted, ventilated, cooled and heated. When doing fieldwork is subject to cuts and bruises, extreme, adverse weather conditions, and injuries and discomforts from pests or animals. Employee will adhere to all safety rules.
Education
Applicants may qualify for these positions based on experience, education, or an equivalent combination as described in the Qualifications section of this announcement.
Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.

How You Will Be Evaluated
You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
