Location: Based out of Clackamas Oregon, working in primarily the Sandy and lower Clackamas basins

Anticipated Duration: February 1, 2024 - May 31, 2024.

Job Description: - What you will do: Conduct steelhead and lamprey spawning surveys in the Sandy and Lower Clackamas River basins. Work independently and outdoors in exposed locations and in inclement weather. Requires walking up to 15 miles daily in difficult terrain and within mountain and urban streams. Requires operating non-motorized watercraft (kayaks and/or rafts) in whitewater up to class III. Surveys are done by wading or boating rivers, counting redds, and recovering and sampling steelhead carcasses. Data is entered into a tablet and uploaded daily, then checked for accuracy. Biological sampling includes recording length, sex, and identifying fin clips. Good safety practices are required to complete surveys, especially while boating. Required training will be provided once the position starts. All tasks require proficiency in accurate record keeping using paper and electronic forms. Driving between sampling sites is required; a state vehicle will be provided. Employee is expected to learn proper identification of fishes and redds; and accurately record and summarize field data from spawning surveys, red counts, and and biological sampling of carcasses. Lifting of fish and equipment up to 50 pounds is required. Employee is expected to effectively communicate with landowners and the general public on a daily basis.
Position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day including most weekends and some night work. Position may be physically demanding.

Requirements/Requested Skills: Minimum qualifications are not established for this position; however we are seeking applicants with the following related skills and experience (e.g., spawning surveys, red surveys, identifying adult fish species (especially salmonids), collecting and accurately recording field data, computer skills, operation of non-motorized watercraft in moving water, and experience communicating with landowners) and who possess or are in pursuit of a Fisheries or Wildlife Science degree or related degree in biological/ecological sciences. Preference for interviews may be given to candidates with this background.
Criminal Records/DMV Check

Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified or uncertified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. Adverse background and/or driving information may disqualify you from further consideration.
