We have two (2) full-time, seasonal Biological Science Assistant (Salmonids Research Assistant) positions that will be based out of The Dalles, Oregon.

Job Description:What you will do
The purpose of this position is to gather specific data that, when statistically expanded, will reflect harvest and catch rates on various stocks of wild and hatchery salmonids This position conducts sport angler interviews to evaluate catch and harvest of adult salmon and steelhead on the Deschutes River.

Working Conditions:
  • These positions require passing of a computerized criminal history background check. The successful candidate will be subject to a criminal history background check with fingerprinting before being hired into this position, and the employee will be subject to annual checks during employment.
  • These positions require a Boater Education Card obtained through the Oregon State Marine Board. There are some exceptions to this (e.g., Coast Guard Boat Operator License or commercial fishing license). For further information, access the Web site at www.boatoregon.com. On your application, be sure to indicate in your job description if you have a card or a copy of your card can be attached. If the selected applicant does not possess a card, they must obtain it before completion of the trial service period as a condition of continued employment.
  • These positions require a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record. Will be driving a state-owned vehicle during the day and night with all possible weather conditions. Primary work occurs outdoors during day and night conditions, in all types of weather, over rugged terrain associated with a river margin. The close proximity to water can make slick, difficult walking conditions. The work is fairly remote with limited cell phone and radio communication. Dealings with the public, local residents and other agency personnel are frequent and a well-developed sense of diplomacy is required. This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor.

Criminal Records/DMV Check
Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. Adverse background information may disqualify you from further consideration.

Requirements/Requested Skills: Minimum qualifications are not established for this position; however we are seeking applicants with the following related skills and experience (e.g., identifying adult and juvenile salmonids, collecting biological information, PIT tagging, motorized boat operation, communicating with anglers and other members of the public, and keeping neat and precise field data) and who possess or are in pursuit of a Fisheries or Wildlife Science degree or related degree in biological/ecological sciences will be given preference for interviews
