We are recruiting to fill three (3) Seasonal Biological Science Assistant (Field Sampling Technician) positions.
Location: Based at the lower Grande Ronde River trap site near Asotin, Washington.
Anticipated Duration:
February 20, 2024 - May 31, 2024, lower Grande Ronde River smolt trap (three positions)
(These are estimated dates. Length of season(s) may be shortened or extended depending on project needs, funding, or factors beyond the project's control).
Job Description: What you will do:
  • Performs data collection, sampling, and marking of juvenile fish for project and operation of fish trap to insure completion of all tasks under the Smolt Monitoring Program and adherence to biological concerns specific to ESA listed fish.
  • Performs juvenile salmonid identification and careful procedure for anesthetization, marking and release of all collected fish. Summarizes, records, and reports daily collection, sampling, PIT tag marking, and fish condition and mortality data to the Fish Passage Center and PTAGIS.
  • Electronically transmits daily sampling data on a daily basis to FPC and PTAGIS. Sampling data will be used to estimate species outmigration and migration timing for management purposes.
  • Monitor other environmental variables at the trap site (water temperature, turbidity).
  • Accurately record data.

Working Conditions:
  • Employees will operate and maintain a large fish trap and small boats. Requires working long hours, frequently on weekends, in adverse weather conditions and/or on slippery stream banks. Work requires driving long distances on gravel roads, possibly in adverse weather conditions. Lifting of fish and equipment up to 50 pounds is required. The trap will be operated seven nights/days per week. Employees will be working and living at a remote field station in adverse weather. Onsite housing will be provided, however, facilities are rudimentary (camping). During periods of intense monitoring activity, employees must work long hours at irregular times. This position is physically demanding.
  • These positions require a valid driver license and acceptable driving record.
  • These positions require a Boater Education Card obtained through the Oregon State Marine Board.
  • These positions require a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor.

Requirements/Requested Skills: Minimum qualifications are not established for these positions; however we are seeking applicants with the following related skills and experience (e.g., smolt trap operation, identifying juvenile fish species (especially salmonids), collecting and accurately recording field data, computer skills, powerboat operation, and PIT tagging) and who possess or are in pursuit of a Fisheries or Wildlife Science degree or related degree in biological/ecological sciences. Preference for interviews may be given to candidates with this background.
These positions require a Boater Education Card obtained through the Oregon State Marine Board. There are some exceptions to this (e.g., Coast Guard Boat Operator License or commercial fishing license). For further information, access the Web site at www.boatoregon.com. If the selected applicant does not possess a card, s/he must obtain it before completion of the trial service period as a condition of continued employment.
Criminal Records/DMV Check
Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. Adverse background information may disqualify you from further consideration.
