THE POSITION

The Solid Waste & Recycling (SW&R) Division within Washington County Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has a Bilingual Green Business Advisor opening. If you are interested in helping businesses reduce waste and start composting and/or recycling programs, and you excel at outreach and communicating information to others, apply today to join our dynamic team!
Equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) are core values of Washington County Health and Human Services. Employees are expected to honor the life experiences of all individuals with whom they come into contact and recognize the impact of past injustices, microaggressions, and trauma.
About the Opportunity:
This position will spend most of their time working directly with a diverse array of businesses to help them meet regional food scraps composting and recycling requirements. The primary duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Help businesses reach their environmental goals by setting up food scraps composting programs, implementing Food Waste prevention practices, and donating excess food to local organizations.
  • Conduct in-person outreach to businesses and communicate technical information to the business owners, managers, and employees.
  • Drive a County vehicle frequently to visit businesses.
  • Track outreach and assistance in our database.
  • Work with the Green Business Coordinator and other outreach staff to develop an approach to reach underserved businesses, such as partnering with community-based organizations or utilizing other outreach strategies.
  • Assist businesses in overcoming barriers to setting up a food scraps composting program and other garbage and recycling challenges.
  • Act as a liaison between businesses, property managers, collection companies, and/or representatives from jurisdictions within the County.
  • Deliver resources, presentations, and other educational materials to businesses.
  • Collaborate with the team to develop bilingual educational materials and communications.
While this position will be allowed to work remotely 2-3 days per week, it will be required to regularly work in the office and field as necessary.
We are looking for someone with:
  • Experience conveying complex information in a way that is easy to understand and appealing to various audiences, in English and Spanish.
  • Experience successfully engaging in difficult conversations with the public.
  • The ability to empathize with customers and think from a business perspective.
  • The ability to problem-solve and identify possible solutions and opportunities.
  • Experience completing detail-oriented tasks and utilizing a strong set of systems and approaches in place to ensure accuracy.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with team members, colleagues, and community members.
  • Strong active listening skills.

Bilingual Positions:
Designated bilingual positions require that the incumbent have knowledge of the Spanish language, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Skills in writing Spanish accurately; ability to speak Spanish fluently; and ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing are required. If you possess these skills, you are encouraged to apply. An additional $75/per pay period for bilingual skills will be paid to qualified employees. Pay periods are every two weeks.

Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply for jobs unless they believe they can perform every job description task. We are most interested in finding the best candidate for the job and that candidate may come from a variety of backgrounds and lived experiences. If you are interested in applying, we encourage you to think broadly about your background and skill set for the role, even if you believe you do not meet all the hiring criteria described above.

Why Washington County?
Are you interested in challenging, meaningful, and rewarding work? Join Washington County in our commitment to advancing racial equity. Our Board of Commissioners worked closely with various community stakeholders and subject matter experts to develop an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Resolution. Adopted in February 2020, this resolution commits to the equitable delivery of Washington County’s services, resources, and opportunities for growth and development to every county resident.
