Summary

The University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS) is seeking a qualified analyst to join the Medical School?s Administration (MSA) team. This position will provide opportunities to work across a broad range of operational areas at the Medical School. You will be a key player in the development of sustainable and actionable decision support assets, the improvement of institutional analytical capabilities, and partnering in improving our data governance. In this position you will be closely involved with meeting the Medical School?s needs around the full complement of faculty, staff, and organizational data in support of UMMS administrative structures work and MSA unit analytic needs as prioritized by leadership (this role will not work with clinical or patient data). The selected candidate will be integral in supporting the data and analytics capabilities across MSA and additionally will contribute to the development and implementation of cross institutional initiatives that are critical to fully leveraging our institutional data assets (e.g., data governance, upskilling programs, etc.). In this role you will also have the opportunity to partner in advising and advocating for the effective exposure of specific data, enabling reproducible results and its integration into the broader Michigan Medicine data ecosystem. This position will report day-to-day to the UMMS Senior Manager for Analytics and Business Consulting who will be responsible for setting priorities and work planning to make sure the most immediate data and information needs are met in the timeframes required.


While the direct supervisor in this role will be the UMMS Senior Manager for Analytics and Business Consulting, it is expected that this position will participate in customer operational meetings as needed to fully understand business operations and the context of the work being requested. Candidates for this position will be expected to be comfortable with:


  • Leveraging various resources (documentation, SMEs, data assets, tools, etc.) to learn the primary data environments impacting their typical operational activities. Ideally, a candidate will have previous experience working with Financial and HR data in a university setting.
  • Sustainably Integrating data across multiple sources (data wrangling).
  • Conducting current and new data analysis.
  • Common statistical concepts.
  • Creating series of standard reports based on relevant analytics.
  • Serving as an innovator in developing new ways to analyze and present data to leadership.
  • Conducting requirements gathering meetings with domain experts to inform report design and development.
  • Creating documentation to accompany reports and analysis.
  • Refactoring existing reports and analysis.

Candidates should be able to function independently, deliver projects in a timely and effective manner, and enjoy creating new and novel solutions.

What You'll Do

What a Typical Day Will Look Like

As a Business Intelligence Analyst, a typical day will likely include:

  • Working in a variety of reporting and analysis tools creating and maintaining dashboard/reports and deliverables that meet active business needs, as well as exploring new ways of showing data and information to better support actionable decisions.
  • Interacting with your internal customers to discover what their business needs are, how data analytics can assist those needs, and presenting alternative solutions to improve the business and better support strategic goals and decisions.
  • Identifying the needs and implementing the solutions outlined in the prior bullet point.
  • A combination of managing and/or administering the design and development of data structures and data extracts to support comprehensive data collection, loading, and extraction for complex analyses, as well as doing quality assurance to validate sourced data is correct.
  • At times, working collaboratively/proactively with the broader analytics on deliverables that require cross domain involvement.
  • Engaging with the University's information technology departments on data, definitions, and ETL processes.
  • Researching trends in the industry as well as best practices from other academic medical centers to move Michigan Medicine into a position of being the leader amongst academic medical centers.
  • Providing support and, in time, expertise in the creation and updating of data governance processes and documentation as needed in coordination with the data governance group.
  • Participating on institutional committees and groups as needed.

Responsibilities

Reporting and Analysis: (40%)

  • Design report formats and graphical representations (Tableau is typically the preferred tool) of data intended for audiences ranging from senior leaders to front line departmental staff.
  • Deliver graphical presentations (dashboards, reports, portal interfaces) of provider, product, program, and service specific data to internal staff, faculty, UMMS leaders, relevant committees, and other constituencies.
  • Conceptualize and develop cross-functional client/unit strategic objectives, business processes, and initiatives that drive or increase organizational value.
  • Work with other BI analysts, data managers, and business systems analysts to plan and implement the data management and analysis of products and programs, including definition of data requirements, data capture and storage, analyses required to measure and evaluate performance, and reporting needs.
  • Lead and guide business process improvement discussions leading to advice on potential problem resolutions including gathering the support and resources for BI initiatives.
  • Manage cross functional unit projects and/or teams which include project planning, task management, status reporting, etc.
  • Work to identify and automate tools and data extracts to deliver reliable information.
  • Maintain on-going reporting for the dashboards and reports developed in this role and by others.

Data Support and Governance: (30%)

  • Develop and maintain supporting documentation of measurement methods and algorithms, data sources, and reporting processes.
  • Become a SME in good data governance practices and provide consultation and advice to the wider institution as needed as well as identifying emerging issues that need to be addressed to support improved decisions and operations.
  • Review reports and analyses and test datasets.
  • Extract data for reporting from departmental and enterprise sources. Administer the design and development of data structures and data extracts to support comprehensive data collection, loading, and extraction needed for reporting.
  • Define and help create mechanisms to extract and reorganize data from existing systems for storage and reporting in departmental databases.
  • Provide support and documentation (data/metric definitions, exceptions, common questions, etc.) to facilitate other domains use of your data to support their business needs.
  • Participate in the development of communication related to the analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of data.
  • Maintain communication with technical groups inside and outside of the department.
  • Ensure adherence to quality standards and facilitate improvement efforts.
  • Follow all appropriate data quality and security guidelines.

Problem Framing and Analytics: (20%)

  • Apply knowledge of data analytics, measurement, and analysis to the completion of complex assignments.
  • Produce analytic results by creating and applying algorithms to data which are extracted and integrated across multiple sources.
  • Translate business needs into analytical solutions.
  • Validate data quality and reasonableness in reports and analyses prior to distribution.
  • Communicate and collaborate with other departments to address problems with data quality.
  • Evaluating performance to measures against results against operational targets, external compliance requirements, and benchmarks.

Other Duties as Assigned: (10%)

  • Work with department and wider institution as needed in internal process improvements.
  • Support and participate in committees as needed or directed that focus on data governance, data interpretation or process improvements.
  • Documentation of information important to the continued delivery of analytic services.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's Degree (Quantitative Field like biostatistics, public health, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Informatics) or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Ability to develop and maintain proficiency in the use of analytic and reporting tools such as SQL, SAS, Microsoft Excel, Tableau or other BI tools.
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines in a fast paced and changing environment with multiple competing tasks and priorities.
  • Experience with Data Warehouse and BI systems.
  • Strong customer service skills and commitment to excellent customer service.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ongoing ability to function effectively on and across teams.
  • Good verbal, written and visual presentation skills.
  • Ability to anticipate requests and needs in advance and plan accordingly.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's Degree (with quantitative elements) with an advanced degree (Business, Biostatistics, Public Health, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Informatics) preferred.
  • 1 or more years of progressively responsible experience in University Operations (HR, FIN, Space, etc.) analysis and data visualizations.
  • Ability to incorporate R, Python, or other programming languages to enhance reporting through statistical analysis, forecasting and modeling.
  • Experience with working with administrative data (Finance, Research, HR, Development, Space, Learner, etc.).

Work Locations

This position may be eligible for remote and/or flexible work opportunities at the discretion of the hiring department. The selected candidate will be able to work with their manager to establish a flexible work schedule that can range from fully remote to fully on-site. The analyst may need to be on-site from 4-10 days per year. Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change dependent on the business needs of the hiring department, throughout the course of employment.
