Purpose and Functions:
Benefit Specialist, Our Chance TN- This is a Social Services based position.
This position will cover several counties - travel will be involved to Cheatham, Hickman, Houston, Maury, and Williamson counties. counties.
As a member of the Family Services Team for Workforce Essentials, the Benefit Specialist will deliver services as a part of Our Chance TN, an initiative of the Tennessee Alliance for Economic Mobility (TAEM) that seeks to support 900 families in moving beyond the benefits cliff. TAEM plans to utilize stratified randomization, based on families’ county of residence, to place families into one of three pathways that support economic mobility. By utilizing this process, TAEM will eliminate selection bias and ensure the state of Tennessee most accurately understands the proposed impact of the elements within each of three interventions.
General Responsibilities:
Provide a warm, welcoming, and stress-free point of entry to families/clients enrolled in Our Chance TN by greeting all clients with respect and kindness and supporting clients consistently.
Provide bi-annual financial counseling sessions to 300 families across multiple counties
Enter family information into online calculator and determine transitional benefit amount (if applicable)
If family is eligible for the transitional benefit, support them in distributing the transitional benefit and collect all required documentation from the caregiver and the vendor to submit the transitional benefit payment request.
Work with families to create customized budgets and spending plans to help increase financial resources and assets, in addition to expanding savings; provide referrals to the Lead Empowerment Specialist for more complex matters like improving credit,managing debt, etc.
Connect the client to next steps and provide warm hand-offs
Consistently encourage caregivers on their journey to move beyond the benefits cliff
Enter financial counseling and transitional benefit data into Salesforce as instructed and engage in regular data quality oversight
Ensure that all documents submitted on behalf of a client are valid.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in human or social services, education, or related field, with at least two years of experience working with families and young children.
- Nonprofit experience and training in trauma-informed care, family-centered coaching, conscious discipline, and ACES preferred.
- Must have reliable transportation, a valid, unrestricted driver’s license, a good driving record, and maintain vehicle insurance.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Qualities:
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain positive relationships
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and strong management/organizational skills
- Knowledge of inner-city human services needs and methods of delivery
- Passion for working with people and ability to maintain a high level of
- confidentiality regarding sensitive information
- Proficiency in Microsoft computer programs and in related software programs and systems, including online information system is required.
- Proficiency in Zoom or other virtual meeting platforms is preferred
- Working knowledge and experience in spreadsheet programs such as Excel preferred (to include creating and massaging data within a spreadsheet).
- Must have good organizational and strong detail orientation skills.
- Will require good internal and external customer service skills.
- Ability to sit at a computer terminal or while traveling for extended periods of time is required
- Must possess the ability to research, analyze and problem solve.
- Must be able to work independently, with moderate supervision.
- Must be performance and task driven.
Position Type & Expected Hours of Work:
This is a salary, full time position based on a 37.5 hour work week. Hours of work are 8:00am until 4:30pm Monday through Friday. This position requires the flexibility to modify work schedule if needed to meet family’s needs.
