Full time position, 37.5 hours/week
The Behavioral Health Advocate is to assist mental health consumers and their families with complaints and problems pertaining to treatment, status or rights as they utilize services and resources in the Behavioral Health system. The Advocate will also be available to assist with conflict resolution and/or problem-solving with consumers and families for matters outside of treatment and services. All activities of the Advocate will be at the request of and/or endorsement of the consumer.
Working Hours
Primary work hours will be Monday - Friday, 8:00a.m. to 4:00p.m. Given the nature of the program, non-traditional hours may be required while working with clients as needed.
Education/Training/Experience
Minimum: Bachelors Degree in a Social or Human Services related discipline.
Preferred: Master’s Degree in a Social or Human Services related discipline; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience in the field of human services.
Computer and technology skills required. EOE.
Must have extensive knowledge of local social service programs, complaint and grievance processing, quality assurance practices and MH/MR provider functions at a level generally acquired through 3+ years related experience/education.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The major responsibilities of the Behavioral Health Advocate will be to:
1. Provide complaint identification and resolution:
- Receive, investigate and facilitate resolution of concerns, complaints or problems expressed by a consumer, legal guardian or other concerned individuals acting on behalf of a consumer.
- Assist consumers, and legal guardians with the procedures for filing written complaints and correspondence, according to providers' policies.
- Assist consumers in obtaining legal or other representation as needed.
2. Provide education, training, and support:
- Develop and distribute consumers' rights materials and information, in cooperation with Casemanagement and mental health centers.
- Assist in MHA Behavioral Health education and anti-stigma efforts.
- Represent the MHA, and provide project management oversight as appropriate, on task-force and other systems-advocacy workgroups.
3. Provide Problem Solving and Consultation:
- Attend hearings to ensure compliance with consumer rights, upon the consumer’s request.
- Establish routine working relationships and channels of communication with providers' staff, county MH/MR office, consumer and family groups and public defenders/attorneys working with mental health consumers.
4. Report all activities routinely

The base salary for this position is $38,500 - $40,000 per year with a 37.5 hour work-week, and includes individual major medical benefits (we do not offer a family/spouse plan) plus a generous PTO allowance. Mileage for work related travel is reimbursed at the Federal Standard rate.
