JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Recreation Coordinator, the Lead Teacher is responsible for the daily direction of site staff and program participants. The Before School Program Lead Teacher will plan, implement, lead, and evaluate daily recreational activities for children in grades K-5 attending the City of Moses Lake Before School Program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assist in developing, organizing, and implementing all aspects of the Before School Program.
  • Plan and teach various activities including, but not limited to, arts and crafts, nature-oriented activities, games, sports, and songs.
  • Serve as a positive role model for other staff and program participants at all times.
  • Work closely with other staff in an enthusiastic, cooperative, and supportive manner.
  • Assist the Recreation Coordinator with maintaining a 1:10 ratio and staff hours.
  • Assist the Recreation Coordinator with following all program policies and procedures.
  • Maintain the safety of participating children and staff at all times.
  • Render first aid in case of minor injury.
  • Plan, implement, and lead the main activity for each day. Work with other staff to purchase snacks, coordinate snacks, and a variety of other daily activities.
  • Assist the Recreation Coordinator in the implementation of behavior management plans for the entire program and individual participants, and use incident reports as needed.
  • Clean program areas and store equipment and supplies at the end of each day.
  • Assist with the preparation and maintenance of required reports.
  • Attend required staff training and other meetings.
  • Maintain a professional image and positive attitude at all times.
  • Perform other related tasks and duties as assigned by the Recreation Coordinator, Recreation Supervisor, Recreation Superintendent, and Parks and Recreation Director.

  • Knowledge and experience working with children, sports, and recreational activities.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, understanding, and emotional stability.
  • Ability to interact professionally with the general public and program participants.
  • Ability to foster a collaborative group process and efficiently use resources.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to anticipate and prevent accidents.
  • Ability to comply with program policies.
  • Ability to demonstrate a strong sense of personal ethics along with a high degree of professional judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to communicate with supervisor for program and personal needs.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Recreation Coordinator assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The Lead Teacher spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include Moses Lake Parks and Recreation, and Larson Recreation Center policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

This position consists of working with youth and parents to oversee Before School Program operations.

CONTACTS

Contacts are typically with youth campers, parents, and recreation staff.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Indoor & outdoor environment.
  • Working varied hours, including mornings or evening shifts and some weekends.
  • Be able to be active with children and provide clear instructions.
  • Climbing ladders.
  • Standing for extended periods of time.
  • Lifting heavy objects weighing fifty (50) pounds.
  • Reaching overhead and above shoulders.
  • Kneeling or crouching.
  • Hearing and speaking to communicate information.
  • Reading and writing to communicate information.
  • Seeing to monitor activities.
  • Sensing hot and cold.
  • Ability to swim or wade in water.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

Responsible for the direction of site staff and operations in the absence of the Recreation Coordinator.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Educational background in recreation, education, or child development is preferable.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience interacting with children and the public is highly desirable.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certifications are required, or willingness to obtain within the first week of hire.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Food handler’s card, or willingness to obtain within the first week of hire.
  • Fluent in English (read, write, and speak).
  • All applicants must be able to successfully pass a background check process which includes reference checks and criminal history checks, or other.
