We are seeking a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Digital Twin Manager to join our growing software team.
This position is hybrid with the ideal candidate being near our software development center in Herndon, VA, USA. This position is open to all states with relocation provided if not near Herndon, VA.
We are seeking a highly skilled, technically detailed, and articulate BESS Digital Twin Manager to lead our Digital Twin team. This manager will work cross functionally between commercial and technical departments to support both business functions. The manager will lead algorithm development, project bidding support, supply agreement support, product design support, and other business needs. Especially valued are experience in utility scale Energy Storage Systems, battery reliability modeling, commercial aptitude, team management, and communication.
Essential Responsibilities
• Lead the team that builds software products and algorithms to estimate state of charge (SoC), SoC Imbalance, SoH, Useable Energy, Round trip efficiency, and other plant level performance metrics; including collaboration with product and engineering teams.
• Lead team to provide project bidding support by providing warrantable fade curve estimation and beginning of life sizing to the sales engineering team.
• Provide subject matter expertise to the business, especially in relation to vendor techno-commercial supply agreement negotiations.
• Ensure continuity of battery cell testing, including vendor prioritization and periodic cell performance reporting.
• Support other business needs on topics including anomaly detection, customer usage statistics, commissioning / capacity test support, and warranty design.
• Communicate complex technical findings and concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders alike.
The candidate must be able to embrace the fast and dynamic environment of a growth stage company, comfortable with adjusting quickly to changing priorities.
PhD in battery chemistry, computer science, physics, mathematics, material science, or power systems engineering is preferred but not required.
Qualifications/Requirements
• 7-10 years of relevant experience.
• Demonstrated good management experience (1+ years).
• Energy storage engineering experience.
• Extensive experience with time-series data.
• Track record of a career trajectory in data science and renewable energy.
• Strong Python programming level (3-5 years).
• Can work independently and provide strong leadership.
• Can architect object-oriented platforms that handle time series data and multiple APIs.
• Familiarity with PySpark or similar.
• Familiarity with common cloud platforms like GCP, Azure, and AWS.
Desired Characteristics

• Experience developing battery reliability models.
• An appreciation for Richard Feynman style communication.
• Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau or PowerBI
• Passion for renewable energy and Energy Storage
• Prior experience developing a monitoring and reporting platform
• An appreciation for solving difficult problems.
• Familiar with large, distributed datasets for high-speed computing.
• Strong leadership record with active participation in renewable energy associations, forums, clubs, or groups.
• Evidenced responsibility, good communication, and accountability in a remote and digital world.
