Job description

SUMMARY

Hennepin Healthcare has a current opening for a Battalion Chief (EMS Supervisor) in our EMS Education department. Under the general supervision of the Deputy Chief Education (manager) coordinate educational programs; including promotion, customer needs assessment, curriculum development, course and instructor scheduling, and instruction; responsible for the direct supervision of EMS Education Specialists and Community Health Specialists. Serve as the initial point of contact for all program related communication.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identify educational requirements of customer organizations and develop course curricula meeting those learning needs using traditional instructional methods, multimedia and/or distance learning technologies
  • Implement and manage educational programs, courses and curricula for delivery to emergency medical personnel, nurses, paramedics, physicians, public safety, other healthcare professionals
  • Train, educate, and supervise EMS Instructors and EMS Coordinators
  • Under the direction of the Deputy Chief Staff (manager) and in collaboration with the Deputy Chief Education (manager), evaluates employee performance and complete annual employee performance appraisals 
  • Investigates and initiates action to resolve queries, complaints and concerns that arise during Battalion Chief (supervisor) shift. Reports issues to Deputy Chief Education (manager) for final resolution including discipline if necessary
  • Works collaboratively with Operations, Communications, and Special Operations Battalion Chiefs in education, training, and oversight of personnel. May also oversee field operations, communications, and special operations in the absence of the other Battalion Chiefs (supervisors)
  • Coordinate educational programs in assigned areas (e.g. ATLS ACLS/PALS, EMT, Paramedic - Initial Program, Paramedic Continuing Education, Community Paramedic, Community EMT), including needs assessment, course instructor scheduling, and course and program budgets 
  • Coordinate participation of content matter experts (e.g. physicians) in course delivery and ensure performance of contracted personnel
  • Promotes the services of Hennepin County Medical Center to external customers
  • Provides technical assistance and serves as a resource regarding emergency medical issues for public safety personnel; share emergency medical educational expertise with public safety departments and other customer groups
  • Maintains course and program records and compiles data for reports, quality assurance purposes, or research
  • Thoroughly understand and enforce EMS department policies and procedures. Make recommendations of updates and changes to Deputy Chief Education (manager). Ensures compliance with OSHA, HIPAA and The Joint Commission
  • Processes payroll for all staff working for their program
  • Ensure that facilities, equipment and supplies are clean and operational condition, orders supplies as necessary
  • Supports management initiatives. Attains goals and objectives within specified time frames, as part of the organization's overall mission
  • Attends all required training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job related hazards
  • Follows the hospital and department exposure control plans regarding blood borne and airborne pathogens
  • Demonstrates respect and due regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employee and to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment
  • Performs all job functions of a Paramedic or EMT, when working as a member of a crew, subject to the individual's certification and training
  • Operates emergency vehicles, administers basic and advanced life support techniques, performs related duties in providing emergency medical services, and transports sick and injured persons to and from a health care facility
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned
     

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a health, business, or education related area
  • Five (5) years of approved paramedic experience or EMS education teaching

OR

  • An approved equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Current certification as a Paramedic with the State of Minnesota or valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of Minnesota.
  • Must have a valid Class D Minnesota driver's license or equivalent, and must have a satisfactory driving record including no more than 2 moving violations in the past 3 years of licensure.
  • Must complete an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) or National Safety Council Defensive Driving Course as designated by Hennepin EMS.
  • Must qualify for and maintain a Hennepin County motor vehicle operators permit

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current BLS, ACLS and PALS Instructor by the American Heart Association or approved equivalent
