TITLE:Referee (Basketball)
DEPARTMENT: Athletics Department
REPORTS TO:Athletic & Wellness Director
FLSA STATUS:Part-time, Non-Exempt
Compensation:$22.00 per hour. Up to 18 hours per week.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Officiate at competitive athletic or sporting events. Detect infractions of rules and decide penalties according to established regulations.
Requirements
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Officiate at sporting events, games, or competitions, to maintain standards of play and to ensure that game rules are observed.
• Judge performances in sporting competitions in order to award points, impose scoring penalties, and determine results.
• Signal participants or other officials to make them aware of infractions or to otherwise regulate play or competition.
• Inspect sporting equipment and/or examine participants in order to ensure compliance with event and safety regulations.
• Keep track of event times, including elapsed time during game segments, starting or stopping play when necessary.
• Resolve claims of rule infractions or complaints by participants and assess any necessary penalties, according to regulations.
• Verify scoring calculations before competition winners are announced.
• Report to regulating organizations regarding sporting activities, complaints made, and actions taken or needed such as fines or other disciplinary actions.
• Confer with other sporting officials, coaches, players, and facility managers in order to provide information, coordinate activities, and discuss problems.
• Compile scores and other athletic records.
Prepare Youth for Success:
• Promote program participation.
• Provide guidance and role modeling to members.
• Register new members and participate in their club orientation process.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Oversee special programs and/or events (i.e. Biddy/Senior Basketball Leagues, Tournaments, Clinics, etc.) and/or participate in the implementation of other activities as directed.
• Must attend staff meetings and participate in staff training events.
• May consult with parents concerning member and Club issues.
• May be required to drive Club vehicle as needed.
• Participation in special programs and/or events beyond regular hours, including weekends.
• Other duties as assigned.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Internal: Maintain close, daily, contact with Club staff (professional/volunteer), Club members, and supervisor to receive/provide information, discuss issues, explain or interpret guidelines/instructions; instruct, and advise/counsel.
External: Maintain contact as needed with external community groups, schools, member's parent and other to assist in resolving problems or issues.
SKILLS AND COMPTETENCIES REQUIRED:
• Basic knowledge in a variety of sports, low organization games, individual/dual activities, including, but not limited to, football, flag football, volleyball, basketball, and soccer.
• Demonstrated knowledge of youth development, safe and appropriate activities for youth, and understanding of the culture and community in which the clubhouse is located.
• Knowledgeable in the fundamental principle of referring/sports. Entry level knowledge is acceptable, additional training will be provided.
• Exceptional work ethic, well organized and self-motivated.
• Experience working independently, managing time efficiently, and setting their own schedule.
• Proven ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and prioritize to meet goals and objectives.
• Experience working with youth and adults of diverse identities and backgrounds
• A team player who enjoys working with others and aligning to achieve higher strategic goals and objectives for youth.
• Minimum of two years' work experience in a Boys & Girls Club or similar equivalent experience coaching students.
• Team building/conflict resolution, motivational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Must have a valid California Driver's License
• Red Cross certification in First Aid & CPR and Bilingual preferred
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
• Able to remain stationary at long periods of time while working on computer.
• Frequently lifts, carries and positions objects weighing up to 30 pounds when moving supplies.
• Typically stands, bends, stoops and crouches.
• Regularly moves about the facility to coordinate work.
