The Basic Patrol Officer is a sworn Police Officer who is responsible for the protection of life and property, preservation of peace and order, arrest of offenders, suppression of crime and the regulation of traffic.DESK OFFICER- as directed;
- Provide information to citizens while performing the duties of desk officer.
- Receive complaints, inquiries and information from citizens in person or by phone.
- Records information in an intelligent, legible and complete manner.
- Dispatches police or fire personnel to scene of calls for service.
- Perform computer checks on persons, vehicles or property according to law.
- Perform duties of jail officer.
- Receive prisoners when assigned and complete/assist booking procedures in jail facility.
- Assist with the maintaining of surveillance of prisoners, follows jail policies and procedures.
- Assist in ensuring prisoner safety, health and welfare.
- Assist with the arrangement of medical care, meals and visits for prisoners.
- Escort prisoners to the Municipal court for scheduled appearances.
- Foot Patrol in business districts. Bicycle patrol as assigned.
- Determine the needs of Community members and act upon those needs.
- Notifies businesses of potential security hazards.
- Notifies appropriate agency or utility regarding public safety hazards.
- Participates in presentations at schools and other community functions.
- Provide services and support to the youth of Cleveland Heights through participation in school programs such as assemblies, school classroom visits, Safety Town activities, bicycle safety programs and other activities associated with the schools and other organizations.
- Utilize problem oriented policing with directed patrol techniques to solve specific community problems such as but not limited to, repeated nuisance calls to an area, repeated juvenile issues, nuisance/disturbances issues in City parks/neighborhoods.
- Assignment into a marked police vehicle while enforcing traffic laws.
- Enforcement of laws relating to the operation and use of motor vehicles on the roadways.
- Enforce traffic laws by stopping motorists and issuing citations or warnings as appropriate; maintain acceptable levels of enforcement and relates traffic enforcement activities to the location, time and causes of accidents.
- Enforces all laws relating to licensing and registration of motor vehicles.
- Arrests intoxicated and drug influenced drivers.
- Enforcement of all state and local laws relative to motor vehicle operation and pedestrian safety.
- Selective traffic safety enforcement as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED required
- OPOTA certification required; or proof of current enrollment in an OPOTA Basic Training Academy
- Must be 21 years of age or older and be eligible for license to carry a firearm
- A valid driver's license
- Citizen of the United States
