SUMMARY

Serves as a specialist in hearing and vestibular (balance) systems. Evaluates, diagnoses, and treats hearing disorders and balance impairments for the pediatric to geriatric population. Determines type and degree of hearing impairment and implements habilitation and rehabilitation services for patient. Services include: evaluation of hearing, hearing aid(s) fitting and dispensing including electroacoustical performance and real ear measurements, aural rehabilitation, evaluation of the vestibular system, counseling of patients and their families, documentation of results, correspondence with educational programs and third party hearing aid funding sources, and discussion of patient results and needs with PCP and otolaryngologist. Trained to provide hearing aids and the necessary follow up rehabilitative care. Work with other assistive listening devices if hearing aids are not an effective solution. Trained to reposition patients with benign positional vertigo.


GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Administers and interprets variety of tests to evaluate hearing and balance such as VNG, air and bone conduction, and speech reception and recorded discrimination tests, OAE’s and ABR evaluations. These tests determine type and degree of hearing or balance impairment, site of damage, and effects on comprehension and speech.
  • Evaluates test results in relation to behavioral, social, educational, and medical information obtained from patients, families, teachers, speech pathologists, ENT’s, and other professionals to determine communication problems related to hearing disability.
  • Plans and implements prevention, habilitation, or rehabilitation services, including hearing aid selection and orientation, ear mold impressions and dispensing, counseling, auditory training, speech conservation, repositioning and other treatment programs developed in consultation with Speech Pathologist and other professionals. Monitors progress of recommendations and treatment plan and reassesses as appropriate.
  • Refers patient to physician, otolaryngologist, or surgeon if medical treatment is determined necessary. Works with PCP regarding referrals for other needed services.
  • Calibrates equipment, prepares related reports, and maintains the audiological suite, materials, and supplies.
  • Selects, fits and dispenses amplification systems such as hearing aids and/or ALD’s as part of a comprehensive habilitative/rehabilitative program. Uses advanced computerized procedures to individualize the fitting of hearing aids

EDUCATION/LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS


Either Doctor of Audiology or Master’s in audiology required. Certified or certification eligible for the Certificate of Clinical Competence by the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association required. State of Massachusetts license in audiology required. American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) may be required based on specialty. EXPERIENCE Five to seven years professional experience working with the hearing impaired of various ages required.
