General Description
Taft College is seeking a qualified Athletic Counselor to join an outstanding team of faculty and instructional administrators to provide quality programs and services to our district, our community, and our students. This is a full-time, regular generalist position with an emphasis on Athletics in the Counseling Department.
Position Description
The athletics counselor serves as the regular member of the Counseling Department faculty with an assignment to assist student athletes in the development and delivery of counseling services related to academic counseling, athletic eligibility, and transfer. The position will require occasional weekend and evening duties including the summer.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Create an environment within the intercollegiate athletic program which promotes academic achievement.
  2. Serve as a liaison between the Athletic Program, Student Services and Instruction which includes attendance at Athletic and Student Services scheduled meetings.
  3. Serve as a liaison between the Athletic Program and NCAA, NAIA, 3C4A, 3C2A, 2 year college Relations Committee and the N4A. Be an active member and attend the meetings, conferences, ceremonies, and scholarships events of the 3C4A and other associations related to student athlete success.
  4. Intrusive counseling and advising of all student athletes relative to educational programs, community college graduation requirements, UC and CSU transfer requirements, NAIA transfer rules, NCAA rules and 3C2A eligibility rules.
  5. Provide counseling services to current and prospective student athletes: Educational Plan for each student athlete, athletic eligibility, presentations and workshops
  6. Serve as the liaison between the student athlete and the college support services, such as: math lab, writing lab, and tutoring.
  7. Register student athletes during priority registration.
  8. This position will monitor the academic progress of student athletes to ensure they are compliant with Taft College, (NCAA) & California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) rules and regulations, especially in the areas of enrollment, retention, and success.
  9. Work with Eligibility Specialist to provide 3C2A academic eligibility documentation for each student athlete.
  10. Make referrals to tutoring, housing, and other resources for student athletes.
  11. Knowledge of Intercollegiate sports and their unique qualities. Be aware of athletes practice and game schedules to ensure student class schedules do not interfere with student athletes’ classes.
  12. Host transfer seminars focused on student athletes.
  13. Meet regularly with the Athletic Director, the coaches, and teams.
  14. At the conclusion of each semester, develop an in-depth athletic program academic performance report including individual, team and overall department data.
  15. Other duties as it pertains to student athlete academic success.
Qualifications
Required:
  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Guidance Counseling, Educational Counseling, Social Work or Career Development; OR California License in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling (LMFCC); OR the equivalent; OR possession of a fully satisfied (Life) California Community College Credential in Counseling.
  • A sensitivity to, and understand of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
  • At least two years working with counseling programs requiring eligibility monitoring.
Preferred:
  • Demonstrated recent counseling experience and/or teaching experience at a community college or similar environment.
  • Demonstrated recent counseling experience with student athlete populations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of athletic requirements of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA), and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletes (NAIA)
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse students who have broad range of academic skills, language abilities, motivation, and educational/occupational goals
  • Demonstrated knowledge of California Community College matriculation requirements
COMPENSATION Initial salary range for the position is $76,818 - $131,102 per year. A doctoral stipend of $4,824.72 is available. This is a full-time, tenure-track, 12-month counseling position.
