Job description

The WVU Foundation seeks a dynamic and seasoned development professional to lead all fundraising components for the medical service lines of the West Virginia University Hospital system and its affiliates. The WVU University Hospitals and its flagship, J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital are in the midst of an invigorating transformation under the leadership of Albert Wright, President and CEO of the WVU Health System, and Michael Grace, President of West Virginia University Hospitals. The AVP needs to be capable of leading significant change in the fundraising operation by focusing the staff on leadership and principal gift fundraising with an eye toward significantly enhancing fundraising results in short order.

The AVP will be responsible for developing private gift support for the units of the hospital system, with a particular focus on the signature programs of the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Institute, WVU Children's, and the Heart and Vascular Institute. Additionally, the AVP leads the fundraising efforts of the Rosenbaum Family House as well as the potential development of new fundraising programs in other service delivery areas at the Ruby complex and at those satellite hospitals that are part of the WVU Hospital system. The ability to direct and/or gain support from executive leadership, unit Directors, and assigned development staff for recommended long and short-range program goals and objectives, specific program plans, and major tactical objectives is required. Accomplishing this basic responsibility requires the leadership skill to advance development program objectives in a complex organizational environment and a deep knowledge of healthcare fundraising.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Lead by example by managing an individual portfolio and meeting or exceeding metrics for the WVU Hospitals and, specifically, its flagship, the J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital

Maximize attention to principal, leadership and major gift prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship within each unit.

Partner with the central staff to ensure support services are delivered timely and accurately and demonstrate exceptional customer service (e.g., gift acknowledgment, contact tracking, prospect research and data management).

Engage in direct contact with constituents for the purpose of 1) identifying prospective donors, 2) cultivating interest in the WVU Hospitals by interpreting its programs and plans, and 3) soliciting support through outright or deferred gifts.

Coordinate the development program to be consistent with central development, policies and practices.

Evaluate personnel and program accomplishments on an ongoing basis.

Serve as development spokesperson for the WVU Hospitals for cultivation of gift prospects and donors.

Plan and administer the development annual operating budgets.

Coordinate staff and volunteer training as a member of the WVU Foundation's central development leadership team.

Ensure that all development programs under the position's leadership are in accordance with the WVUF Gift Acceptance Policy and all other WVUF policies.

Serve as a member of the WVU Hospital's Leadership team and as a member of the Central Development Leadership team.

Qualifications

Education, Experience and Competencies:

Master's degree or equivalent and eight to ten years related experience and/or training in Higher Education Health Care Fundraising.

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations: N/A

Physical requirements

Air travel will be required. Some work will be necessary after hours and on weekends, when necessary.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Manage and supervise Development officers in WVU Cancer Center Institute, the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, WVU Children's, the Heart and Vascular Institute, the Rosenbaum Family House and other new programs as they are developed. Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these units. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Other Duties

Work Environment: The position is expected to be in-person primarily, but over time, hybrid may be acceptable in alignment with the WVUF work/telecommuting policy. Travel is required at times for this position.
