Surgery sucks, dentistry blows, and emergencies are just not our jam. The efficient pursuit of the almighty dollar does not make us want to get up in the morning.
Enjoy working in a privately owned veterinary practice that was started by a stubborn woman hellbent on proving that this profession can be fun, rewarding, and profitable. Dr. Meghan Ellis got what she wanted and vows to spread the joy as far as possible.
The first place we're spreading the joy is consistently voted one of the best places to live in the USA- Cary, NC. We find ourselves in need of a full or part time associate house call veterinarian.
About Family Veterinary Mobile Clinic
We are a house call only practice that provides preventive care, chronic disease management, and behavior medicine to dogs and cats in the Sanford/Southern Pines areas of NC. We are expanding the practice to Cary, Apex, and Holly Springs. Our plan is to have multiple vets working in multiple areas of NC to start, then to continue expanding WITHOUT VENTURE CAPITALIST OR CORPORATE OVERLORDS to different areas of the country. Family Veterinary Mobile Clinic will always be a closely held private company.
Our company also provides dog and cat training and pet sitting services. We want to add grooming to the mix eventually. You will not be involved with any of this except to recommend those services to clients who could benefit from them. We currently do surgery once a month but we are not renewing our lease agreement so you won't ever need to do surgery for our company. This area is blessed with wonderful urgent care, emergency, and specialty practices. We have local practices for you to refer for dentistry, non-specialty surgery, etc.
We do not perform non-patient euthanasia.
Our core value is we are committed to happy healthy relationships. What that means for you is:
- We are open and honest in all of our communications. You will have regular meetings with your manager, meetings for the development and updating of medical protocols, and company meetings. All of our strategies, company documentation, projects, SOPs, employee handbooks, and meeting notes are available on Monday.com.
- We are Fear Free Certified and practice according to those principles at all times. We understand and respect what a fearful pet is telling us and make changes accordingly. We never manhandle or forcefully restrain pets. We expect you to use a lot of PVP, sedation, chemical restraint, and referrals to our behaviorist for the mental and emotional health of the pet and for your own safety.
- You choose your work schedule. Our minimum commitment is 16 hours per week. It just has to be a consistent schedule, for example every Monday-Thursday 10a-2p. If you want more hours, you will work in Sanford and Southern Pines taking over Dr. Meghan's schedule until the Cary/Apex is busier. You will work the hours you want!
- We are sticklers for safety. You will have an experienced and trained vet assistant or RVT helping you every day, someone you have a huge influence in choosing from our pool of qualified applicants. If you or your RVT/VA feel unsafe for any reason (for example a client refuses sedation for a fear aggressive pet) fire the client and leave or hang up (if they are being abusive on the phone).
- We value your privacy and time off. We give you plenty of time during the appointment to complete your medical records, which are on Ezyvet. We do not bug you on your time off except for an emergency (ie, your tech is in the hospital; we're sending someone else to work with you tomorrow).
- You have quality time off for self-care and hobbies and to develop and nurture your personal relationships. We have a 4-day work week, if you want to work that often. We are off evenings, weekends, and whatever holidays you celebrate. You get 4 weeks PTO to start, 6 weeks after 3 years with us, and 8 weeks after 10 years.
- We support your professional and personal development. Dr. Meghan provides coaching to help you with this. We also have an unlimited CE budget- learn whatever makes sense for the growth of the company. Your CE time off does NOT count against your PTO. We promote from within. If you are interested in other positions in our company, for example Medical Teams Manager, your coaching sessions will help you get the job you want.
- We provide a generous health insurance stipend and a broker so you can get the best health care possible. Most of our employees have health, vision, dental, short term disability, life, and other benefits included within their stipend.
- We invest in your future by matching your 401k contributions 100% up to 6% of your salary (FT); a prorated percentage for part time.
- We respect our team's knowledge and experience. Our medical protocols are developed and updated by the people working in the field- veterinarians. You are responsible for helping us update our protocols regularly so we don't become old-school or whenever new diagnostics or therapies are developed. For example, we updated our feline and canine arthritis protocols ahead of schedule due to the introduction of Solensia and Librela. Of course, that also means you are responsible for delivering the highest quality care possible to every patient by following our protocols.
- For behavior patients, we need you to examine the pet and treat anything that may cause or exacerbate the problem, including prescribing anxiolytics and pain management trials. You also oversee the work of the behaviorist but they do most of the behavior modification treatment. Dr. Meghan will help you with this if it is not a strong point.
Your Day
You and your tech/VA will start by packing the vehicle for the day. Supplies are located at the doctor's house (including controlled drugs). We provide all of the bags, coolers, a small fridge for the vaccines, etc. You can work it out with your tech/VA who drives and whose vehicle you use. We schedule our appointments back to back with the understanding that you don't need all the time allocated for each appointment so it includes drive time to the next home. If you work a full day, you get an hour lunch; schedule breaks as needed. We schedule so you aren't driving more than 20 minutes between homes, typically 10 minutes.
You and your tech/VA take what you need into the client's home. We have clients corral their pets so they are accessible ahead of time. You'll take a thorough history while your tech/VA gets everything ready for all the patients. You'll spin down blood samples in the client's home before you leave. Fecal samples are saved until the end of the day. You should have plenty of time to complete records during the exam, obviously except send-out labs and fecal tests. If there are no pending test results, send the client the clinical summary by email (it's one button in Ezyvet). Besides regular appointments, you may occasionally have to drop off medications or written prescriptions or pick up lab samples from clients. You take payment at the time of service.
At the end of the day, you and your tech/VA drop off send out labs at the UPS Store. Then you unpack the vehicle and run fecal tests. Finish the records with fecal tests and send the client their clinical summaries. Wait for send-out lab results to be available the next day to email those clinical summaries.
We carry a very limited pharmacy. Most prescriptions (all preventatives) are sent through Covetrus. We can also provide written scripts for clients to pick up at a local pharmacy. We do not call in prescriptions as that is an unmitigated disaster.
The packing and unpacking of the vehicle adds about 30 minutes to the beginning and end of the day. You'll also have to consider drive time to your first appointment and after the last one to your home. My RVT gets to my house an hour before the first appointment to pack the vehicle and give us time to drive to the first appointment. At the end of the day, I'm done working within an hour of the last appointment ending (including driving home, unpacking, and finishing whatever records/emails) so definitely consider all this as you think about your schedule. A 10a-6p day of appointments is really 9a-7p.
