Job Summary
Auburn University Libraries seeks creative, dynamic, and results-oriented candidates for the position of Makerspace Specialist in the Innovation & Research Commons (I&RC). Reporting to the Manager of the AU Libraries Innovation Support Department (ISD), the Makerspace Specialist (Rank: Associate Tech Support Analyst-IT) is a key member of a team of professionals responsible for supporting the MakerSpace and Extended Reality (XR) Space in the Innovation & Research Commons (I&RC) on the 1st floor of RBD Library.
The Makerspace Specialist oversees the day-to-day operations of the MakerSpace and XR Space; this includes providing training and technical assistance to Auburn University faculty, staff, and students who want to use the emerging technologies in the MakerSpace and XR Space; selecting and maintaining the MakerSpace and XR Space equipment and software; and ensuring that the MakerSpace and XR Space comply with AU Risk Management policies and guidelines. The Makerspace Specialist provides expert instruction for individuals and groups utilizing emerging technologies like 3D printing and Virtual Reality (VR) for educational and research purposes, including internally and externally funded research projects. In collaboration with the Biggio Center for Teaching and Learning and other interdisciplinary campus groups, the Makerspace Specialist exercises leadership in developing and applying emerging technologies and services that support knowledge creation. Finally, the Makerspace Specialist will investigate and evaluate emerging technologies for potential adoption, develop online learning objects, help to manage projects, and participate in workshops.

Essential Functions
The primary duties include but are not limited to:
  • Consult with AU faculty on production and research projects involving the AUL Innovation and Research Commons (I&RC) MakerSpace and XR Space; help to foster new research- and curriculum-related initiatives and ideas for the MakerSpace and XR Space.
  • Supervise and train student employees in the MakerSpace and XR Space, including safety and technical training.
  • Maintain equipment in the MakerSpace and XR Space by keeping up with routine maintenance, troubleshooting, reporting issues, and ordering necessary parts and expendables; track warranty and service contracts and coordinate service as needed; maintain the physical MakerSpace and XR Space environment with a view to accessibility and safety.
  • Provide individual or group training and technical assistance to users of equipment such as specialized computers and software, virtual reality (VR) headsets and controllers, and other wearables in the XR Space.
  • Work with the I&RC Outreach Programs Administrator on the MakerSpace and XR Space libguides, tours, workshops, and instructor-related sessions, including those done in collaboration with AUL subject librarians.

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in IT or related field preferred
or
Associate's Degree in IT or related field preferred plus 4 years of relevant IT experience in IT support and analysis, preferably in a university setting
or
High School diploma or equivalent plus 8 years of relevant IT experience in IT support and analysis, preferably in a university setting
Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications
Minimum Skills and Abilities
Working knowledge of or experience in one or more of the following areas: technology hardware basic troubleshooting, including but not limited to: PC and Mac platforms; engineering software, e.g. SolidWorks or AutoCAD; Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality (VR/AR) hardware, software, and/or development; 3D printing and scanning; programmable sewing machines; fiber arts and textile work; laser cutting; basic electronics and circuit board design and soldering; Arduino or Raspberry Pi boards. Ability to work with others on a team, strong commitment to customer service, strong written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational skills; ability to learn new technologies, troubleshoot issues, interpret technical information, and solve problems. Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills. Commitment to a high level of customer service. Experience with 3D printing, programming languages, or virtual and augmented reality. A demonstrated ability to learn and understand technical and design concepts.
