Job description

MD Anderson's Cancer Biology department has a long history of being a leader in the field of basic and translational Cancer Biology research. The department emphasizes the training of students, postdoctoral fellows and clinical fellows in the fundamentals of tumor biology to improve the outcomes of patients with malignancies. The department has built a program with close ties to many clinical departments to facilitate information exchange between the laboratory and the clinic. As such, faculty in the department are investigators on NIH funded collaborative Cancer Biology research grants. In addition, there are several physician-scientists who have joint appointments in Cancer Biology, facilitating the exchange of clinically-relevant information between the laboratory and the clinic.
CANCER BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT
The Associate Software Developer is responsible for delivering solutions that accelerate the pace of research operations and discovery. This opportunity will focus on providing assistance to ongoing research projects and developing software programs as well as innovative methods.
The solutions to be delivered aim to streamline research execution and enable data visualization and exploration in a way that assists investigators in the development of new research.
KEY FUNCTIONS
Full Stack Development
  • Participate and provide assistance in all technical aspects of software development related to the cancer research platform
  • Proficiency in popular coding languages including Python, Java and C++ and frameworks or systems such as AngularJS and Git
  • Follow established coding guidelines within the team utilizing approved software packages
  • Designing machine learning algorithms to create new software programs and systems
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills
  • Maintain required documentation for the infrastructure and overall application architecture
  • Assist in the process to ensure applications meet the technical needs of the institutional Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) assessment and 21 CFR Part 11 regulations

Innovation
  • Collaborate closely with the intended users to grasp the challenges they face and provide innovative, creative, and potential solutions
  • Compile design and development patterns to enhance the speed of progress from conceptualization to project completion
  • Keep up with knowledge on improvements in new or relevant technology
  • Explore novel approaches to deliver relevant data and analysis to researchers

Laboratory Organization
Demonstrates a willingness to learn and implement new methods essential for laboratory research

Education
Required: Bachelor's degree.
Preferred: Master's degree.
Experience
Required: None. May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one to one basis.
