Job description

Walt Disney Imagineering is the creative development, planning, design, engineering, production, project management, and research and development arm of Disney’s Parks and Resorts business segment. Representing more than 150 disciplines, its talented teams of Imagineers are responsible for the creation - from concept initiation through installation and commissioning - of all Disney Resorts, theme parks and attractions, real estate developments, regional entertainment venues, and new media projects.
This position is a Project Hire position, meaning it will have a set duration based on business needs.
Job Summary
The Show Systems team helps to dream and create many of the magical moments that our guests enjoy. Our team is responsible for delivering world class Audio-Animatronic figures, show action equipment and special effects through their full lifecycle. We partner with various disciplines to help deliver quality products and our processes and tools help to take us from concept design to production and installation.
Mechanical engineers within the department drive the design and development of animatronic figures and show action equipment, where durability, long life, reliability, and safety are a must. We are responsible for various engineering tasks: concepts, mockups, part design, hazard analysis, FMEA & system safety, FEA, design reviews, documentation, and the overall functionality to fulfill the creative intent. The candidate will support various phases of the engineering process which includes design from concept development through final design, production, test, installation, and commissioning for a variety of theme park attractions. In addition, candidates could be expected to package machine elements within complex organic forms leveraging areas such as: tooling design, digital sculpting, mesh modeling, organic and complex surface modeling, materials science, and 3D printing.
Responsibilities
As an associate you will contribute to a blend of…
Design components in Solidworks and prepare detailed drawings.
Create models and drawings in Solidworks and release them in Electronic Data Management Systems (EDMS).
Perform calculations for machine designs and 3D printed components including development of loads, stress analysis, and motor and component sizing.
Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of mechanical designs.
Perform Rigid Body Dynamic (RBD) modelling of animated figures.
Perform Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) of mechanical designs.
Provide production support for animated figures and show action equipment.
Support test and commissioning of animated figures and show action equipment.
Generate drawings and engineering reports to document engineering designs.
Proficiently build/communicate design concepts through 3D design software while showcasing innovative and creative design solutions.
Work to provide functionality to an animatronic figure while maintaining creative intent.
Design shells, skins, and tooling for animated figures and props.
Collaborate closely with other partners: such as costuming, figure finishing, electrical, show programming, animation, creative, and show set.
Develop knowledge of best practices in manufacturing methods, and trends and developments in technology and equipment
Basic Qualifications
What you bring to the role…
Ability to perform basic engineering analysis and calculations
Possess a basic knowledge of mechanical components, manufacturing processes, tooling design or processes, 3d printing and material science
Superior "clean sheet" design sensibilities
Familiarity with engineering design tools e.g. SolidWorks, AutoCAD,  Navisworks or BIM 360, ANSYS or other FEA program, MATLAB
Familiarity with organic modeling design tools e.g. Zbrush, Rhino, Fusion360, Geomagic Design X
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Creative problem solving
Willingness to travel both domestic and international as required
Availability to work various shifts commensurate with global project requirements (typically 8am – 5 pm)
Demonstrated/proven strong leadership, technical and interpersonal skills
Self-starter with demonstrated initiative - able to handle multiple tasks and priorities
Required Qualifications
Ability to obtain Professional Engineer License
Qualifications
Prior Disney experience
1 year relevant experience or Master’s Degree
EIT/FE
Required Education
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Engineering Mechanics.  
Education
M.S in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Engineering Management or related field
