Other Conditions:

Nine months of state funding annually. The appointee is expected to fund the remainder through extramural funds. Pending position clearance.

 

We seek a colleague whose scholarship will be centered on the study of tropical fisheries and marine ecosystems with applications to management and policy, with demonstrated interdisciplinary thinking, and expertise in field surveys and experiments, lab-based life history studies, and statistical analysis and modeling. Special consideration will be given to candidates whose research is relevant to marine fishery resource management in Hawai‘i and the Western Pacific, especially through demonstrated engagement with fishery management agencies as well as Native Hawaiian community groups, and who has or will establish long-term relationships with marine resource managers and communities of the Pacific to collaboratively fill research needs that will ensure the future of tropical fisheries, and their importance to people and place.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Conduct original research in Quantitative Fisheries ecology with an emphasis on near shore or offshore ecosystems.
  2. Develop and implement field studies and experiments to collect ecological data, assess marine populations, and monitor environmental parameters in tropical waters.
  3. Perform lab-based life history studies of living marine resources.
  4. Apply advanced quantitative and modeling techniques to analyze fisheries data, population dynamics, habitat associations, and ecosystem interactions.
  5. Collaborate with colleagues across multiple disciplines to address complex ecological and fishery questions.
  6. Contribute to the development of a graduate program in fisheries, including designing and teaching courses related to Quantitative Fisheries science.
  7. Publish research findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals and present research at academic conferences and outreach events.
  8. Secure external research funding through grant proposal development and submission.
  9. Mentor and supervise graduate students and research assistants.
  10. Engage in community outreach and education

 

Minimum Qualification

  1. A doctorate from a college or university of recognized standing in a natural or social science discipline.
  2. At least four years of effective research with demonstrated increasing professional maturity at the rank of assistant researcher or equivalent
  3. Research ability judged competent and adequate for the rank by comparison with peers active in the same field at other major research universities
  4. Demonstrated ability to plan and organize research activities, including effective interactions with student and/or assistants when appropriate.
  5. Demonstrated expertise in applying best available methods for modeling the habitat associations of tropical marine organisms.
  6. Evidence of active research agenda in developing and implementing science-based practices for assessing and managing tropical fisheries and marine ecosystems.
  7. Ability to develop and teach courses in quantitative methods at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  8. Demonstrated commitment to community outreach and engagement.
  9. Outstanding academic record with evidence of and/or ability to publish in high-ranking peer reviewed venues.
  10. Evidence of national recognition in relevant research discipline.

 

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Evidence of extramural research support from diverse sources.  
  2. Demonstrated achievements across areas of scholarship (teaching, research, service) that contribute to the four goals of the ‘M?noa 2025’ strategic plan. Including research that engages with and serves Hawai‘i’s people and ecosystems, in alignment with the ‘M?noa 2025’ strategic plan’s commitment to aloha ‘?ina.
  3. Demonstrated experience in co-development of fishery and marine research projects with Native Hawaiian community organizations for culturally significant places such as loko i’a or wild-harvested resources such as ‘opihi.
  4. Demonstrated experience with capacity building for students and professionals in fisheries biology and management throughout the tropical Pacific region.  May include leading training workshops at US Territories and international locations.
  5. Demonstrated experience providing scientific technical guidance on stock assessments to fishery management agencies in Hawai‘i and the Western Pacific region.
