Overview


Kamatics, a division of Kaman, is looking for aspiring engineers to join our Engineering Rotation Program as an Associate Engineer. For one year, the Associate Engineer will rotate through four disciplines of engineering at Kamatics: Applications Engineering, Quality Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering and Production Engineering. This is a full time, direct hire position which will rotate through the disciplines every three months for 12 months before permanent placement on one of the teams. The rotations are all onsite in our Bloomfield, CT facility. All of the Engineering Rotations will require researching, developing, and designing solutions for aerospace component manufacturing to meet customer requirements, productivity and quality expectations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


Applications Engineering Assignment:

  1. Create bearing designs and Kamatics proposal drawings using Computer Aided Drawing (CAD) programs to meet customer requirements within quality, cost and timeline expectations.
  2. Provide answers to customers’ technical questions.
  3. Create test plans and/or test reports for planned or completed in-house bearing tests, as required.
  4. Consult with Sales on product requirements. Assist Sales with presentations or may create technical presentations for use by Sales personnel. Deliver formal technical presentations or have face-to-face discussions with internal and external customer on detail design and product issues.
  5. Develop project plans and execute short to mid-term projects dealing with customer specific product development activities and/or Kamatics new product development projects.
  6. Contact Kamatics suppliers to obtain technical and cost information on materials and capabilities. Produce cost estimates for new Kamatics design proposal for use by Sales.

Production Engineering Assignment:

  1. Create complex production drawings using Computer Aided Design (CAD) programs to meet production expectations of process improvements, productivity, and quality and customer requirements. Process development for manufacturing to meet customer design intent.
  2. Develop work instructions on new products or new equipment to meet productivity and quality requirements. Conduct complex tolerance studies to ensure manufacturability.
  3. Direct work of Technicians. Ensure that productivity and quality standards and measures are met. Communicate information to appropriate departments and individuals. Provide reports, as needed.
  4. Collaborate with shop floor and manufacturing engineer to ensure process capabilities.

Quality Engineering Assignment:

  1. Drive productivity improvements through statistical process control and new gage technology.
  2. Analyze data to determine process capability, control and improvement.
  3. Exposure to basic and advanced gaging methods including CMM inspection and programming.Participate in internal and external auditing activity. Working with a cross functional team auditing internal processes for compliance and effectivity.

Manufacturing Engineering Assignment:

  1. Use knowledge of manufacturing processes and machine methodology; provide detailed drawings or sketches as guidance for drafting personnel to complete process sequencing. Use knowledge of cutting tool technology, fixture design, machining and CNC programming techniques, to establish best practices for production. Continuously work with Machinists to improve machining efficiencies.
  2. Responsible for the sustainment of standard machining techniques.
  3. Utilize Lean manufacturing methods to enhance manufacturing efficiencies and reduce costs. Perform research for equipment acquisition; develop Return on Investment (ROI) reports for equipment acquisition justification.
  4. Develop manufacturing methods and work instructions on new products or new equipment to meet productivity and quality requirements. Ensure processes yield product that meets cost and quality expectations, with reliability and consistency. Determine tools, jaws, speeds, feeds and fixtures to support manufacturing operations. Develops machining programs using Computer Aided Manufacturing systems, to meet production expectations of productivity, quality and safety.
  5. Train Production Engineers (PE) in support of knowledge base growth and development.

Other Responsibilities:

  1. Provide primary support to Value Stream assigned, train with Senior Manufacturing Engineer to develop capability to support all Value Streams as requested. Provide a high level of service to all internal and external customers; share knowledge and lessons learned. Contribute to positive teamwork environment.
  2. Act as a troubleshooter for assembly / machining process / manufacturing problems. Resolve problems; work with Applications Engineering, Purchasing, Sales Representatives, Product and Process Suppliers and customers to resolve issues.
  3. Maintain clean and safe work environment. Follow safety and environmental procedures and regulations. Report safety and environmental incidents to supervisor.
  4. Perform other duties as assigned. Accomplish related results as needed.

Qualifications


Education:

BS degree in Mechanical/Aeronautical/Metallurgy/Civil Engineering preferred.

Experience:

Entry level position. Related internships or co-ops are a plus.
