About the Department of Learning and Engagement:
The Department of Learning and Engagement at The Museum of Modern Art supports the Museum's founding educational mission to ensure that people of all ages and abilities "enjoy, understand and use" the art of our time in ways that add value to their lives. The department collaborates across the organization to empower a diverse public to form their own interpretations and connections to art by telling stories, asking questions, actively making and participating in the artistic process, and offering and listening to multiple perspectives. Programs offered by the department range from artist-driven activations to classes, online courses, studio programs, facilitated gallery explorations, workshops, publications and more.
Position summary:
The Associate Educator, Public Engagement works as part of a team to advance adult programs at the Museum that foster new ideas and connections through the art of our time, providing new platforms and means to catalyze meaningful experiences with art. The Associate Educator will conceive and co-conceive programs that include but are not limited to artist talks and panel discussions, artmaking and writing, workshops, and performances with a focus on the power of art and artists to effect individual and social transformation. This position will work as part of a team to design, coordinate, implement, and facilitate adult programs at the Museum that provide impactful experiences, attract new audiences, and engender critical conversations. This position will report to and work closely with the Manager, Public Engagement to develop audience development strategies and public programs largely tied to MoMA's exhibition program.
Specific responsibilities include:
  • Ideates and shapes public programs for adult audiences including identifying key stakeholders, developing relationships with internal and external collaborators, shaping program formats in alignment with departmental goals, and maintaining excellent communication with all stakeholders.
  • Implements and hosts public programs including setting and meeting production deadlines; invites and contracts artists and speakers; develops operations schedules; schedules and facilitates planning meetings; maintains good communication with other MoMA departments such as curatorial, Audio Visual, Visitor Engagement, Security, Marketing, and Development; and maintains a public presence at events through interacting directly with the public.
  • Evaluates public programs including developing evaluation plans; creates participant and collaborator surveys; facilitates reflection discussions; reports and shares data and findings.
  • Supports Manager, Public Engagement in developing annual program strategies that help build audiences and create legible program strands aligned with curatorial, educational and audience-based goals.
  • Develops and cultivates an extensive network of higher learning institutions, creative communities, and community partners helping to advance collaborative programs that offer opportunities to strengthen and grow our work.
  • Contributes to an ambitious, effective, and proactive team culture that supports the continued improvement of MoMA's public programming and engagement strategies.
  • Navigates a fast-paced programming environment by making decisions and solving problems to support the needs of audiences, internal and external collaborators, and staff.
  • Works with other members of the Public Engagement team to analyze results of audience research and visitor demographics in strategizing on how to best serve the MoMA community.
  • Develops in partnership with other Museum educators, scholars, and curators, new programs and experiences for adult programs, including virtual and onsite activities, that connect to the exhibitions and the permanent collection.
  • Maintains contact with the broader network of museum professionals through participating in conferences, professional networks, and organizations.
  • Develops, tests and implements resources for MoMA's website.
  • Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.

Requirements:
  • Strong knowledge of art history.
  • Bachelor's degree in art history, museum studies, museum education or related field, master's preferred, and six or more years of progressively responsible relevant experience working in museums or the cultural sector, or equivalent.
  • Experience developing and coordinating events for adult audiences and incorporating feedback into program design.
  • Experience evaluating programs for impact.
  • Facility with public presentation and convening diverse public groups.
  • Strong cultural competencies and consciousness of cultural identities and differences.
  • Experience managing project and program budgets.
  • Excellent interpersonal, collaboration, negotiation and team-building skills to establish and maintain good working relationships with a wide variety of individuals and groups, with an emphasis on tact, diplomacy, flexibility, and professionalism.
  • Exceptional time-management and personal organization skills.
  • Proactive communicator with excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to demonstrate flexibility in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Must be available for evening and weekend work as required.
