Description
Reporting to the Executive Director of Student Health Services, the Director of Student Access Services (SAS) is responsible for promoting an accessible, inclusive, and equitable culture for students with disabilities. The Director works closely with faculty, staff, and administrators of the University to ensure that students with disabilities are appropriately accommodated in all aspects of their college experience. The incumbent is responsible for the development of policies and procedures that address the needs and concerns of students with disabilities and ensure campus compliance with all applicable federal laws. The incumbent ensures legal compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, 2008 Amendments to the ADA, Sections 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and other legislation pertinent to persons with disabilities. The Director functions as the primary institutional representative for ADA monitoring and compliance and is also responsible for the development and day-to-day operations of Student Access Services. The Director reviews documentation to identify the disabilities requiring accommodation and determines the appropriate academic accommodations for new and returning students each semester, incorporating problem solving strategies and referrals to other University resources. The incumbent must be able to approach work in a way that is data driven, scalable, strategic, proactive, and aligned with the University’s broader mission and vision.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Oversees the direct service to students with physical, cognitive, psychological, psychiatric, and learning disabilities to determine eligibility for accommodations and the necessity and type of reasonable accommodations.
  • Advocates for change that would remove barriers to students with disabilities.
  • Maintains and manages a student information database and ensure appropriate documentation of student participation, accommodations, and progress.
  • Keeps individual records of all student and family communication, decisions, and actions taken.
  • Provides workshops to faculty and students.
  • Contributes and assists with the development of resource materials and publications related to students with disabilities.
  • Presents at New Student Orientation and other student and family facing events.
  • Facilitates communication between students and faculty on academic accommodations needed by students with disabilities and promotes understanding/awareness of the needs and concerns of students with disabilities.
  • Participates on the CARES (Campus Assessment, Response and Evaluation) team to monitor student behavior, develop appropriate intervention plans and coordinate services for students who may pose a threat of self-harm or a threat to the community.
  • Ensures accountability of the office through preparation and maintenance of administrative records and reports.
  • Regularly reviews and revises campus practice to stay current with evolving laws and technology in disability service provision.
  • Collaborates with appropriate college departments and staff to coordinate and implement admission, testing, orientation, advising, and registration of students with disabilities.
  • Serves as a consultant to faculty on creating more accessible classrooms and curriculum and provide outreach and support to faculty and staff to support universal design.
  • Creates, develops, and implements workshops and other training opportunities for faculty and staff on disability accommodations; disseminate disability information to assure compliance with ADA and Section 504.
  • Collaborates with the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion around issues/topics related to students with disabilities.
  • Manages budget and monitors expenditures and monthly financial data.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in special education, social/behavioral science, vocational rehabilitation, psychology, or related field required.
  • Minimum two years related work experience, preferably in a similar environment.
  • Extensive knowledge of and ability to interpret and comply with the American Disabilities Act, Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and other applicable state, local and federal laws/regulations.
  • Expertise and competence in understanding and articulating possible accommodations for a broad variety of disabilities (e.g. physical, mental learning, psychological).
  • Demonstrated success in developing and implementing programs to support student with disabilities.
  • Ability to function in a consultative and collaborative manner, applying problem solving techniques and using professional judgment to make decisions, particularly in complex and sensitive situations.
  • Proven leadership and progressively responsible administrative experience and skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to communication with individuals in stressful situations.
  • Knowledge of accessibility technologies.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Detail‐oriented individual who is self‐motivated and a team player.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast‐paced working environment subject to multiple interruptions.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with upmost discretion.
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication and phone skills.
  • Superior organizational skills and ability to complete assigned projects in a timely manner.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters’ degree in a related field preferred.
  • Familiarity with key performance indicators (KPIs) and similar data sets.
  • Knowledge of and experience accessing wide network of local, county and state resources that serve individuals with disabilities.
