Position Summary
The Associate Director/Director, Medical Science Liaisons will hire, train, manage and develop a team of Medical Science Liaisons while also serving as a hands-on member of the team. Reporting to the VP, Medical Affairs, this role will establish, develop and maintain scientific and clinical relationships with medical professionals, KOLs, researchers, and other members of the scientific community focused on neurological and rare diseases. The Associate Director/DirectorMedical Science Liaisons in conjunction with the MSL team and VP of Medical Affairs, will integrate their scientific expertise and knowledge in all interactions, and ensure compliant and successful scientific communication and education around Longboard’s pipeline.
Responsibilities include but may not be limited to:
- Lead the creation of a global team of expert MSLs focused on epilepsy and rare disease in the United States, Europe and future additional regions
- Responsible for management, performance, and coaching of MSL direct reports to ensure compliant execution of field medical plans, strategy, and activities
- Act as a team lead with hands-on involvement, modeling what is expected of high level MSLs for the team by performing as a player-coach role for a regional territory.
- Develop and coach MSLs by creating development opportunities and ensuring excellence across the team in their performance and relationships with KOLs
- Develop SOPs and Guidelines required for effective MSL field engagement that is timely, compliant, ethical, and customer-focused
- Execute on medical field initiatives, with the objective of providing support to specialized and complex product launches
- Lead MSL team in providing medical education and translation of medical information into practical insights to support key clinical decision-making
- Build, develop and maintain credible scientific relationships with top key opinion leaders in the field to identify and address scientific needs and stay abreast of current scientific trends
- Serve as primary liaison with investigators interested in developing and conducting investigator initiated research
- Collect and communicate clinical insights and intelligence on the market environment
- Maintain in-depth scientific and therapeutic knowledge
- Partner with internal departments to ensure accurate delivery of medical and scientific information
- Represent Longboard as a scientific expert at scientific conferences, advisory boards, clinical investigator meetings, and patient advocacy group meetings
- An advanced doctorate degree (PharmD, MD, DO, PhD or equivalent)
- 8+ years of experience in Medical Affairs
- Experience managing a team of MSLs preferred
- Possess a thorough understanding of neurological and rare diseases, with experience in Epilepsy
- Knowledge of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, PhRMA guidelines, Office of Inspector General (OIG) guidelines, and Sunshine Act are required
- Highly developed interpersonal skills and the ability to successfully collaborate on a cross-functional team
- Demonstrated success managing multiple projects and meeting tight timelines
- Collaborative team player who can motivate colleagues, lead cross functional teams, and drive towards meeting objectives
- Ability to effectively communicate scientific data to both internal and external customers, including opinion leaders and managed care organizations
- History of success maintaining relationships with key health care professionals and staff (KOLs, Advocacy Leaders, Medical Society Leadership, Payers and others)
- Understanding of HIPAA and the importance of patient data privacy
- Excellent communication (written and verbal), organization and collaboration skills are required
- Travel: up to 60%

Pay Transparency
The expected salary for candidates who work in La, Jolla, CA is $190-225k. The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and length of experience within the industry, education, etc. Longboard Pharmaceuticals, Inc is a multi-state employer and will consider candidates based in remote work locations.
