Position Summary

IllumiNative is a dynamic, groundbreaking, and rapidly growing organization that is charting a next phase of ambitious, strategic growth. The organization is ready to significantly scale up its infrastructure, capacity, programming, and impact to build power for Native peoples to advance justice, equity, and self-determination. 

The organization seeks a skilled, passionate and innovative Associate Director of Advancement (foundations) to support the Senior Director of Foundation Relations in designing and implementing foundation giving strategies including portfolio development and management, frontline fundraising using a moves management system, and donor stewardship. 

Organization Summary

IllumiNative is a national, Native woman-led racial justice organization fiscally sponsored by New Venture Fund, a 501(c)3 public charity. Founded in 2018, IllumiNative’s mission is to amplify contemporary Native voices, stories and issues to build power for Native peoples to advance justice, equity, and self-determination. IllumiNative works to transform how Americans and key institutions think about and engage with Native peoples in order to fight systemic racism and achieve transformational change for Native communities and future generations. Building power for Native peoples through representation and systems change is the frame, lens and goal of our work. Through interrelated programs of Research, Narrative Change + Impact, and Pop Culture + Media, we amplify Native voices, stories, and issues across public platforms, activate support from diverse national audiences, and strengthen the influence and capacity of Native peoples to drive systems change. Each of these programs serves as foundational movement infrastructure to dismantle the systemic racism facing Native peoples and to build power and advance equity and justice for current and future generations. 

Key Requirements of the Associate Director of Advancement (Foundations)

Reporting Relationships

The Associate Director of Advancement (Foundations) reports directly to the Senior Director of Foundation Relations. Responsibilities include:

  • Prepare foundation letters of inquiry, concept memos, proposals and reports for review by the Senior Director.
  • Track and project manage proposal and report submissions.
  • Oversee and lead research of new funding  opportunities and prospects.
  • Prepare briefing memos, background documents, and agendas for funder meetings and visits.
  • Represent IllumiNative’s work to funding partners and other key external audiences; attend and participate in all funder and prospect virtual meetings
  • Maintain and track staff interactions, foundation activities, and deadlines in organizational database. This includes maintaining foundation e-lists and profiles, analyzing data and preparing reports as needed.

 

Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Ability

  • Bachelor’s degree as well as 2 years fundraising experience or equivalent, preferably in a racial or social justice organization.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to work effectively with Indigenous Peoples and communities.
  • Exceptionally strong written and verbal communications skills with the ability to create high-quality, compelling materials
  • Excellent project project management skills.
  • Attention to detail and timeliness in responding to requests from funders, partners, and colleagues.
  • High-level computer literacy with MS Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) web-based research, and familiarity with donor databases.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and ability to learn from successes and failures.
  • Ability to learn and internalize IllumiNative’s mission, theory of change, research and approach to power building through narrative, cultural and organizing strategies in order to grow and sustain these efforts.
  • Entrepreneurial, creative and ambitious, as you will be helping to build the advancement department and IllumiNative’s next chapter of infrastructure, growth and impact.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt as needed to be a team collaborator and leader.
  • Ability to operate effectively with peers and other associates within a collegial, yet demanding, remote work environment.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary range: $82,000 - $92,000

Benefits: Comprehensive benefits package that includes 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance for employees (and their families). Employees are able to enroll in 401k retirement plan and are eligible for a 3% automatic contribution and up to a 3% employer match on 401k contributions. Employees are also eligible for pre-tax transportation benefits. Employees will receive 80 hours of vacation time, 80 hours of health leave, up to 2 days of casual leave, and 20 hours of volunteer leave annually. Employees will also receive 13 paid holidays throughout the calendar year. Employees are eligible for 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave after 90 days of employment.
