Position Purpose:

Responsible for raising the maximum current-use dollars for Dartmouth College Athletics. The Associate Director is responsible for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities as well as recruiting, training, and coaching volunteers. Works with the Managing Director to execute an integrated operations plan for marketing and communications.

Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp:

Bachelors or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Five years of progressive fundraising experience, preferably in an annual fund setting or a higher education, athletics campaign environment.
  • Demonstrated success in soliciting, closing and stewardship of gifts.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills including tact and discretion.
  • Demonstrated analytical and strategic thinking capabilities.
  • Ability to work with, earn the respect of, and command the respect of senior officers and high-level volunteers.
  • Volunteer management experience with high-level volunteers such as trustees and advisory boards; recognized leadership qualities and customer service orientation
  • Proven organizational abilities.
  • Ability to manage several projects simultaneously, working both independently and as member of multiple teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to consider new initiatives and fresh perspectives.
  • Ability to work with features of Microsoft Excel to conduct data analysis.
  • Demonstrated marketing and negotiation skills and knowledge of college athletics.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in a complex development organization is an important consideration
  • Strong technical aptitude for working with database applications and software tools, and quickly learn new applications.
  • Strong understanding of the case for unrestricted giving and giving to higher education.
  • Demonstrated initiative and strong service-orientation of donors, volunteers, and staff.
  • Ability to function independently with minimal routine oversight.

Quick Link:Description:
  • Works closely with the Managing Directors and Leadership Giving fundraising officers to develop and implement short-term and long-term plans for cultivation and solicitation strategies for Athletic prospects.
  • Identifies ways for prospects to engage with the College. May manage an assigned prospect pool for rating, cultivation, and solicitation.
  • Performs research and analysis to determine capacity, inclination, and interests of prospects.
  • Participates in the preparation of materials for select athletic donors, based on donors' interests and resources, and presents requests for support.

Description:
  • Works closely with the Senior Managing Director to establish Athletics volunteer boards and create high-level volunteer opportunities for selected sports.
  • Recruits, trains, coaches, and motivates alumni volunteers.
  • Serves as a resource to volunteers on matters of prospect strategy and, where appropriate, offers new approaches, techniques, and potential creative solutions to complex solicitations.
  • Motivates volunteer leadership group to recruit new members and seeks out ways to increase annual giving from alumni, parents, and friends.
  • Runs quarterly advisory board calls and planning sessions for selected Friends groups.

Description:
  • Participates in and, in some cases, oversees implementation of Friends Giving communications plan, including solicitation letters, newsletters, invitations, web pages and other personalized communications with donors and volunteers.
  • Brings a creative, critical, and analytical approach to planning sessions with colleagues.
  • Oversees data development for all friends' solicitations.
  • Leverages the available information systems required to manage the tracking of mail appeals, communications, websites and events and other solicitation, cultivation, and stewardship vehicles.
  • Studies, recommends, and implements new marketing techniques to improve overall annual giving results and to increase average gifts.
  • Works directly with writers, editors, designers, printers, College mailroom and vendors.

Description:
  • Works both alone and with volunteers or senior officers of the College to cultivate and solicit prospects.
  • Identifies prospects for larger gifts and establishes a regular effort of personal solicitation with the appropriate staff members.
  • Travels to visit prospects as necessary, and often in tandem with senior officers of the College.

  • Develops regular reports to assess progress toward overall and individual friends group goal, identify key prospects and support alumni volunteers.
  • Creates and produces all ad hoc data reports for Athletics Fundraising.

Description:
  • Participates in program development, strategic planning and management of Athletics Fundraising as well as rigorous goal setting and ongoing monitoring and evaluation of Athletic fundraising results; implements strategies to ensure success in meeting goals.
  • Supports an integrated development organization by collaborating with development departments—especially Individual Giving, Leadership Giving, Gift Planning, and the Dartmouth College Fund—as well as with academic and administrative offices.
  • Serves as staff liaison to Family Giving Office.
  • Identifies potential opportunities for a challenge grant(s) and pursues them, as appropriate.
  • Incorporates the needs of diverse populations in program planning.

Description:
  • Participates in a variety of events designed to involve alumni and friends, highlight a specific priority or individual, educate prospective donors, identify new prospects, and build a network of alumni contacts.
  • Working with Donor Events, collaborates in the planning, invitation process and execution of special athletic events and receptions for top prospects, donors, and volunteers.

  • Serves as point person for on-line trainings and research-based education relating to best practices in annual giving and athletics annual giving.
