The School of Humanities and Sciences (H&S) is the foundation of a liberal arts education at Stanford. The school encompasses 23 departments and 25 interdisciplinary programs. POSITION SUMMARY:
The Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS) is seeking an Associate Director. The Associate Director will work under general supervision of the Stanford Global Studies (SGS) Executive Director and the Center's Faculty Director, and must possess and demonstrate a positive outlook on continuous process improvement efforts while maintaining a team-based and customer-focused mindset. It is critical that this position exhibit the abilities to practice sound judgment and decision-making, effective written & oral communication, strong attention to detail and respectful relationship management. This position must also exhibit a strong desire to continuously learn new and unfamiliar business topics, policies and procedures as they relate to the Associate Director - the ability to translate this information into operational successes will be critical.
Part of SGS in the School of Humanities and Sciences, CEAS serves as a resource and information hub for East Asian Studies at Stanford, fostering research and teaching on East Asia across all academic disciplines, and serving faculty and students throughout the university. CEAS administers an M.A. degree program in East Asian Studies, provides competitive fellowships to East Asia-focused undergraduate and graduate students, manages a robust visiting scholar program-including a corporate affiliates program linking industry and academia-and maintains a very active schedule of academic lectures and symposia. CEAS is a designated National Resource Center (NRC) funded by a grant from the Department of Education Title VI program.
• This is a 100% FTE, continuing exempt position. This position will be based on the Stanford campus and will be considered for an option of telecommuting (hybrid of working on-site and off-site), subject to operational need.

JOB PURPOSE:
The CEAS Associate Director position provides leadership on programmatic and administrative issues, supervises four full-time staff, coordinates and organizes public lecture programs, facilitates community outreach programs, pursues development and other funding opportunities, and is responsible for the day-to-day functioning and performance of the Center. Working in consultation with the CEAS faculty director, steering committee, and other faculty committees, the Associate Director helps set policy and direction for the center's activities, including developing recommendations to enhance the academic vibrancy of East Asian Studies at Stanford. At the same time, the Associate Director works with the SGS Executive Director and other colleagues to develop collaborative activities within the division and across the university. The successful candidate will possess: an in-depth knowledge of, and working experience in, East Asia, including a working knowledge of one or more languages of the region; several years of experience managing Title VI National Resource Center and FLAS grants (preferably at least two grant cycles); strong financial management experience in an institution of higher education; and strong management skills.
CORE DUTIES:
• Develop and manage research programs by conducting research activities, including outreach to varied stakeholders within the program, assigning resources and making program improvement recommendations that impact policies and programs.
• Develop or contribute to outreach strategy related to program communications, development, partnerships, and fundraising/funding.
• Manage budgets and develop financial plans.
• Contribute to and inform on strategic program/entity planning and related funding and financial sustainability.
• Identify, recommend and implement opportunities for new research.
• Source, collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the program or function.
• Coach and mentor program staff.
• Teach and/or assist in the teaching and administration of courses. Develop curriculum. Develop curriculum-rating survey, detailed feedback on courses and make recommendations for preliminary overview and changes.
• Write and/or edit complex content for proposals, research grants, peer-reviewed publications, and other program activities.
• May advise students and/or coach/mentor clients.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience. Advanced degree may be required for some programs. For jobs with financial responsibilities, experience managing a budget and developing financial plans. Candidate with an MA or PhD strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Ability to develop program partnerships and funding sources.
• Excellent oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
• Ability to oversee and direct staff.
• Basic knowledge of managing budgets and developing financial plans.
• Certifications and Licenses:
• For teaching jobs, advanced degree or certification may be required for some programs.
• Strongly preferred:
• Academic background in East Asian studies; Ph.D. degree or equivalent professional experience preferred.
• Working knowledge of one or more languages of the region.
• Several years of experience managing Title VI National Resource Center and FLAS grants (preferably at least two grant cycles); experience in writing successful Title VI grant applications.
• Strong financial management experience in an institution of higher education.
• Substantial administrative experience, including staff supervision and budget management.
• Experience in managing degree-granting academic programs.
• Knowledge of visiting scholar regulations, corporate affiliate programs, and academic/industry partnerships.
• Involvement in designing and implementing data reporting and data management systems.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
• Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks.
• Occasionally use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds.
• Rarely sort/fi le paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.
• Ability to use voice to present information/communicate with others.
• On-campus mobility.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
• May work extended hours, evenings or weekends.
• May travel locally.

The expected pay range for this position is $90,000 to $136,000 per annum.
