About the Department
The Division of the Humanities comprises 19 degree programs across 16 departments and committees, with approximately 800 students from around the world enrolled in PhD, MFA, and MA programs, 200 tenure-track faculty, 150 other academics, 135 staff, 300+ student employees, and numerous visitors and temporary employees. Students and faculty dedicate themselves to the thoughtful consideration of humanity's place in the world. This dedication is displayed through interdisciplinary centers and programs as well as workshops on diverse themes ranging from political theory to contemporary art to animal studies. Staff play a vital role in the day-to-day functions and success of the Division.
Job Summary
This position works independently to perform a variety of activities relating to software support and/or development. Analyzes, designs, develops, debugs, and modifies computer code for end user applications, beta general releases, and production support. Guides development and implementation of applications, web pages, and user-interfaces using a variety of software applications, techniques, and tools. Solves complex problems in administration, maintenance, integration, and troubleshooting of code and application ecosystem currently in production.
Responsible for the design, implementation, and maintenance of new and existing applications, systems architecture, and network infrastructure. Ensures operation and security of all servers and networks. Configures, installs, maintains, and upgrades applications and hardware for the organization's infrastructure and for end-user devices.
Position is full-time, benefits eligible. Hybrid work schedule.
Responsibilities
  • Handles complex duties related to software development and support, and is seen as a team expert within Administrative and Academic Computing, providing software development and infrastructure consultation to the Humanities Computing team.
  • Identifies business processes that require additional support beyond what is provided by centralized services and implement initiatives accordingly.
  • Collaborates with units on campus to ensure systems interoperate with central data feeds and authentication systems and complies with University's data stewardship policies/regulations.
  • Schedules the development and/or maintenance of existing systems to ensure they remain current with respect to business needs and technical and security best practices.
  • Evaluates and resolves service requests from end users.
  • Responsible for internal web application development, maintaining public web presence, and managing the computing and storage server infrastructure necessary to support the Humanities Division's Administrative and research needs.
  • Partners with leaders of Divisional administrative units to gather requirements for systems and keeps them up to date as business needs change. Recommends and implements enhancements to improve technical services and support.
  • Serves as technical resident expert on existing and emerging technologies. Recommends innovative solutions to meet the Administrative and Academic needs of the Humanities population.
  • Hires and trains Software Engineer and Web Developer positions, as well as student web application assistants. Discusses goals and promotes professional development opportunities. Engages in annual performance management process. Routinely provides feedback and guidance to staff and students on day-to-day, short-term, and long-term activities.
  • Designs new systems, features, and tools. Solves complex problems and identifies opportunities for technical improvement and performance optimization. Reviews and tests code to ensure appropriate standards are met.
  • Acts as a technical consultant and resource for faculty research, teaching, and/or administrative projects.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Experience:
  • Managing individuals and teams.
  • Working in higher education environment.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:
  • Web application security fundamentals.
  • Proficient at designing, writing, testing, deploying, and/or maintaining web applications.
  • Front end JavaScript frameworks), common open-source PHP CMSs (especially Drupal and WordPress).
  • MySQL, PostgreSQL or other similar database and caching software.
  • Ansible or other infrastructure automation / configuration management tooling.
  • Security and authentication systems (TLS, LDAP, SAML, Shibboleth, Okta).
  • Familiarity with IT standards and frameworks, such as ITIL, NIST cybersecurity, usability, and digital accessibility.

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and pivot as needed.
  • Work independently in a collaborative team environment.
  • Explain technical concepts to non-technical users.
