The Associate Chief Nurse of Medicine/Surgical/Oncology is responsible for the provision of nursing care to the following intermediate unit patient care areas: Oncology, General Medicine, and Surgery (specifically: orthopedics, plastics, gynecology, and urology). In collaboration with the interdisciplinary clinical team of nurses, physicians, and other clinical and administrative leaders, the Associate Chief Nurse is expected to achieve program goals and objectives and support the BWH goals of quality care for patients, quality of work-life for employees, and fiscal success.
Qualifications:
- Current registration in nursing in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
- DNP (or) PhD preferred.
- MSN (or) a BSN with a master's degree in a related field, required.
- Current specialty certification required or to be obtained within two years of hire. Certification needs to be maintained while employed in this position.
- Minimum of 10 years of nursing experience.
- Minimum of 3-5 years' experience in nursing administration within an academic medical center preferred.
- Proven ability in the management of diverse activities pertaining to a patient service line or clinical programs.
- Expert interpersonal and communication skills.
- Must have broad theoretical knowledge and work experiences that demonstrate:
- Familiarity with models of professional nursing practice,
- Management of personnel and fiscal resources in a patient care setting,
- Program development, implementation and evaluation
- Long-range program planning that involves complex decision-making skills.
- Experience in dealing with frequent stress due to critical issues relating to patient care, changing organizational climate, and personnel issues.
- Work generally occurs throughout the institution. Will require frequent visits to patient care units and occasional visits to community agencies.
The position may include supervision of assistant directors, nursing directors, nurse administrators, nursing program directors, professional development managers, and other levels and types of personnel.

Collaborate with Nursing School clinical faculty and BWH Nursing staff to provide and evaluate clinical experiences with schools of nursing.
Financial Planning and ManagementDetermine resources that are needed to meet patient care and quality of work-life goals in collaboration with the clinical and administrative leadership team.
Collaborate with inter-professional colleagues in developing financial plans for new and existing programs.
Provide leadership to clinical and nursing management staff in the development and management of capital and operational budgets.
Allocate and supervises resources to achieve productivity, customer service, and staff development goals.
Personnel ManagementParticipate in leading and resolving nursing resource requirements and plays an active role in recruitment, retention, and development of programs that create an environment that recognizes and rewards excellent performance.
Contribute in the development, implementation, and monitoring of performance standards and performance management systems to assure continuous improvement in the quality of service and care.
Provide leadership to nursing and clinical management staff in the selection, evaluation, promotion, and termination of employees.
Actively engage in and promotes proactive employee relations in all spheres of influence. Ensures staff communication channels are effective and that issues are heard and acted upon.
Professional Education/ DevelopmentFacilitate, coach, encourage, and mentors staff and managers in developing the skills and abilities they need to improve their ability to deliver quality patient care.
Assure regulatory compliance through staff education.
Assure development and implementation of educational programs, which meet the educational needs of staff and offer growth opportunities to staff.
Strategic PlanningDevelop and lead an operational plan based on information and trends, forecasts, and marketing strategies, which have implications for the institution's operational and strategic direction.
In collaboration with medical and administrative staff, routinely participates in the strategic planning process and in designing improvements based on data.
Evidenced Informed Practice/ResearchProvide leadership support for and participates in the development of nursing and other clinical research programs at Brigham & Women's Hospital.
Apply research findings in developing practice standards and guidelines.
Collaborate with colleagues in nursing and other subject areas on clinical research studies.
Review all research proposals that require Nursing staff involvement to assure the correct support is available and appropriate.
