Brief Description of Duties

The University of the District of Columbia, College of Arts and Sciences, Division of Education, Health and Social Work invites applications for a MSW Program Director for a new hybrid MSW program. The MSW Program Director is a nine-month full-time tenure track faculty appointment in Social Work with a start date of January 2, 2024.

The University of the District of Columbia is a public, Historically Black College and University (HBCU) comprehensive university with an urban land-grant distinction.  It is the District of Columbia's only public institution of higher education.  UDC has historically been a minority-serving institution.  The University services approximately 3,000 students across its two-year baccalaureate, masters, and professional programs.  The Washington metropolitan community provides an exceptional learning laboratory for faculty, staff, and students. 
UDC offers a BSW Social Work Program established in 1976.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
 

The MSW Program Director will be responsible for completing the candidacy process and ensuring all Council on Social Work Education's standards are met. The Program Director will provide administrative leadership of the MSW Program, recruitment of faculty and students, and development of Program policies, procedures, and practices. The MSW Program Director will have face-to-face and online teaching responsibilities. The successful candidate will also engage in scholarship/research and service that includes the Program, University, and profession. Candidates should demonstrate strong commitment to social justice, diversity, equity and inclusion, and engaged learning.  Distance learning and on-line course development experience are highly valued.                                                                                                            

  • Provide vision, administrative direction, and leadership to the development of the MSW Program.
  • Oversee and coordinate the CSWE MSW candidacy process to successful completion.
  • Establish and maintain all requirements for accreditation established by CSWE in collaboration with other Social Work faculty.
  • Contribute to curriculum development.
  • Teach graduate courses in the MSW program.
  • Maintain an active scholarship agenda, including pursuit of external funding and collaborative research that includes student participation.
  • Oversee recruitment and retention of MSW program faculty and students.
  • Serve as the primary program liaison or contact relative to academic advising.
  • Perform additional assigned tasks to enhance the quality of the program.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A DSW or PhD in Social Work preferred or closely related field.
  • A Master's degree in Social Work from a Council on Social Work Education accredited institution.
  • A minimum of two years of post-master's practice experience in Social Work
  • Undergraduate and graduate Social Work teaching experience.
  • A demonstrated record of scholarly production, including practice-related research.
  • Demonstrated experience with the Social Work accreditation or reaffirmation process.
  • Experience in on-line curriculum design and development, including utilization of experiential teaching methods.
  • Licensed as a Social Work practitioner (or eligible to apply for licensure) in the District of Columbia.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to engage with diverse groups and show sensitivity to variations across age, gender, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, language, culture, national origin, and prior training and educational experience.
  • Ability to provide leadership through teaching, scholarship, curriculum development, administrative experience, and/or other academic and professional activities in Social Work.

              
A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:

  1. An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and
  2. At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education.


Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.
A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:

  1. An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization, or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate;
  2. A record of scholarship and professional growth; and
  3. At least five (5) years of full-time teaching experience in an institution of higher education, including three (3) years as an Assistant Professor.

Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).
Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
 

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.
Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
