Job Summary
The Assistant Vice President forAnimal Resources and Attending Veterinarian holds a pivotal role in ensuring the ethical and responsible treatment of animals used in research within a research-intensive university setting. This individual oversees the comprehensive management of the university's animal resource program while ensuring compliance with federal regulations, institutional policies, and ethical standards regarding animal welfare. The Assistant Vice President forAnimal Resources and Attending Veterinarian plays a critical role in supporting the university's research mission while upholding the highest standards of animal care and welfare.
Responsibilities:
  • Strategic Leadership, Compliance & Communication: Provide strategic direction and leadership for the university's Animal Resources program, aligning with institutional goals and priorities. Develop and implement policies, procedures, and best practices to ensure the human care and use of animals in research. Ensure compliance with federal regulations (e.g., USDA, NIH, AAALAC) and institutional guidelines governing the care and use of animals in research. Stay abreast of changes in regulations and standards and implement necessary adjustments to maintain compliance. Foster collaboration and communication among stakeholders, including researchers, faculty, administrators, regulatory agencies, and animal welfare organizations. Serve as a liaison between the university and external partners involved in animal research.
  • Veterinary Care & Animal Welfare: Provide clinical veterinary care and oversight for Animals involved in research activities. Ensure the health, well-being, and humane treatment of animals through preventive care, treatment of illnesses or injuries, and appropriate euthanasia when necessary. Serve as the primary advocate for Animal welfare within the university community. Collaborate with researchers, faculty, and staff to promote the ethical and responsible conduct of research involving animals.
  • Budget and Resource Management: Develop and manage the budget for the Animal Resources program, including personnel, facilities, equipment, and veterinary care services. Allocate resources effectively to support the needs of research programs while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
  • Facility Management: Oversee the design, construction, maintenance, and operation of animal facilities to meet the needs of diverse research programs while ensuring optimal animal welfare standards. Manage resources effectively and efficiently to support research objectives.
  • Training and Education: Develop and implement training programs for researchers, animal care staff, and students on best practices for the care and use of animals in research. Promote awareness and understanding of ethical considerations and regulatory requirements related to animal research.

What We're Looking For:
  • Earned D.V.M. or V.M.D. degree from an accredited institution
  • Board certification or eligibility for board certification in laboratory animal medicine (ACLAM)
  • Ten or more years of relevant experience
  • Experience managing facilities for the care and use of large numbers of animals in diverse multidisciplinary research and instructional programs, preferably in academia
  • Must meet the qualifications for appointment at the associate or full clinical professor level
  • Demonstrated ability to provide effective program leadership, including workforce management and budget oversight
  • Proven ability to effectively organize, prioritize and perform multiple job functions and conflicting priorities, meet deadlines, and manage changing situations
  • Skill in understanding federal regulatory requirements in the use of animals in agriculture as well as research settings
  • Skilled supervisor and coach, able to motivate or inspire both junior and senior staff
  • Strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills to manage complex tasks and/or those that require balancing competing interests
  • Strong oral written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality with discretion
  • Result driven accepts and acts on all forms of feedback to effect change
  • Demonstrated success working with and providing leadership for a diverse and geographically dispersed team
  • Adaptable and open to change
