Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Music and Theatre in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor of Applied Voice. Position responsibilities include teaching classical Applied Voice to a studio of 18-20 students, teaching related courses as assigned (e.g. vocal pedagogy), collaborating with other faculty, actively recruiting students, and participating in the regular life and work of the Department.

This part-time term faculty position is an 87.5% full-time equivalent (FTE), 9-month position with an initial 3-year term.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in vocal performance, vocal pedagogy, or a closely related field

  • Minimum of three years of experience teaching classical Applied Voice at the university level (beyond any teaching done as a graduate assistant)

  • Demonstrated success as a performer in recitals, concert work, and/or opera at the regional, national, and/or international level

  • Soprano or mezzo-soprano voice

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five or more years of experience teaching Applied Voice at the university level (beyond any teaching done as a graduate assistant)

  • Demonstrable record of student success (competitions, graduate school/young artist program acceptance, etc.)

  • Demonstrable record of success in student recruitment, student retention, and community engagement

  • Active participation in a national organization devoted to the study of voice and/or music education (e.g. National Association of Teachers of Singing, Classical Singer, National Opera Association, College Music Society, American Guild of Musical Artists, etc.)

  • Experience teaching a vocal pedagogy course

  • Flexibility teaching across vocal styles that include opera, art song, and musical theatre

The Voice Division at Iowa State University prides itself on personalized, in-depth training which allows students to develop their own artistic voices. Students are encouraged to explore all genres of vocal music with a focus on classical training and healthy vocal development. The Department of Music and Theatre at ISU is devoted to the growth and development of the undergraduate artist.
