The Criminal Division of the Lake County State's Attorney's Office is seeking an experienced attorney in our Felony Review Division. Applicants should be prepared to independently make felony charging decisions as well as run court calls and hearings. Some criminal experience is required. The position requires flexible hours, with night and weekend work on a rotating basis.

  • Conducts hearings in first appearance court and detention court.
  • Takes direction from supervisors.
  • Prepares indictments and conducts grand jury proceedings.
  • Works closely with law enforcement as they respond to initial reports of crime.
  • Interacts effectively with law enforcement, colleagues, and Judges.
  • Is responsible for independently exercising appropriate charging discretion.
  • Willingness to analyze felony cases and enter into plea negotiations in first appearance court.
  • Availability to work nights and weekends on a rotating basis as the attorney responsible for felony charging decisions.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must, at a minimum, meet the following qualifications:
  • Must be a licensed attorney in Illinois with significant criminal law experience.
  • A minimum of 12 months of experience in criminal law. Prior work in prosecution is preferable.
  • Considerable knowledge of criminal law, judicial procedures, and rules of evidence.
  • Ability to analyze facts and exercise sound judgment, determine appropriate case resolutions, and litigate in a courtroom.

To perform the job successfully, an individual must demonstrate the following competencies.
  • Candidates must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, and be able to practice strategic thinking.
  • Organization, attention to detail, and sound judgment are required.
  • Candidates must take initiative and be adaptable to changes in the work environment.
  • Dependability and punctuality are imperative for success in this role.
  • Willingness to switch between an 8:30 to 5:00pm workday and an evening and/or weekend workday on a rotating basis among attorneys in the division.
  • Candidates must know the elements of criminal offenses and have a strong understanding of evidentiary rules.
Education and/or Other Requirements
  • Completion of a Juris Doctorate degree program.
  • Licensed Attorney in the State of Illinois.
  • A minimum of 12 months of experience in criminal law. Prior work in prosecution is preferable.
