Overview: The Cancer Early Detection Advanced Research (CEDAR) center is a collaborative institution within the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute. The Knight Cancer Institute, known as one of the pioneers in personalized cancer medicine, is an international leader in research and cancer treatment. At CEDAR our mission is to detect and stop lethal cancers at the earliest stage because early detection saves lives. This is an ambitious goal, one that requires novelty, creativity, and innovation. Function/Duties of Position

CEDAR is currently hiring for a highly motivated scientist to work on applications of Advanced Spectroscopic & Microscopic Analysis of Biological Tissues, Cells and Biomolecules

 

  • Microscopy / spectroscopy techniques. Significant expertise / familiarity to independently work with all or most of the following techniques; Spatial omics, Super-resolution microscopy, Single-molecule spectroscopy, Protein sequencing, DNA sequencing.
  • Sample preparation for microscopy / spectroscopy techniques listed above. Perform sample prep for microscopy / spectroscopy experiments, using techniques from molecular biology, biochemistry, chemistry and surface science.
  • Data Analysis, of results from microscopy techniques listed above: process data, analyze / interpret data, prepare and deliver results and conclusions in written reports and oral presentations.
  • Familiarity / expertise with maintenance and operation of spectrometer and microscope equipment
  • Be a domain expert / thought leader in photochemical and photophysical sciences. Have fundamental understanding of theory and practice of photochemical / photophysical sciences, including ultrafast kinetics and single-molecule applications. Have expertise in absorbance, fluorescence, luminescence, fluorescence lifetime and related spectroscopies. Have sufficient domain expertise to be a general resource to help others in CEDAR.

 

As an Associate Scientist -Scientist you will have deep scientific expertise and expertise in the practice of team science.  With guidance from CEDAR Leadership and the CEDAR Review Committee, you will develop, work on, and oversee CEDAR-funded cancer early detection research projects. This includes independently and collaboratively developing research proposals and managing and contributing to research project teams, determining the most suitable methods to be used, interpreting and performing complex data analysis on experimental results, and drawing conclusions. You will maintain a high level of professional expertise and as needed develop innovative techniques and experimental systems to meet research program goals. In addition, you will independently and collaboratively prepare research findings for presentation at scientific meetings and conferences and manuscripts for publication, prepare research project proposals for review and progress reports on funded projects, and develop and implement procedures and systems to maximize the organization and efficiency of projects. You will mentor and train staff, trainees, and team members, and develop and foster relationships with partners in academia and in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industries.

Required Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree in relevant field and 5+ years of relevant post-doctoral work experience
  • Those with Doctoral degree in relevant field and 3+ years of relevant post-doctoral work experience will be considered at the Assistant Staff Scientist level
  • Advanced Spectroscopic & Microscopic Analysis of Biological Tissues, Cells and Biomolecules
  • Microscopy / spectroscopy techniques
  • Sample preparation for microscopy / spectroscopy techniques listed above
  • Data Analysis, of results from microscopy techniques listed above
  • Familiarity / expertise with maintenance and operation of spectrometer and microscope equipment
  • Be a domain expert / thought leader in photochemical and photophysical sciences
  • Excellent communication, analytical and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team while being collaborative in resolving problems
  • Strong publication or IP record
  • Experience handling chemical and biologically hazardous materials
  • Knowledge of policy and regulations applicable to the laboratory, including but not limited to safety, animal and radiation
  • Technical proficiency, scientific creativity collaborative ability, and independent thinker
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with a high performing work group
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks at one time
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team while being collaborative in resolving problems
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new and innovative processed quickly
  • Ability to operate complex scientific equipment and develop and troubleshoot complex experimental protocols
  • Ability to analyze short and long term project needs
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three or more years in a research position, including supervisory and project management experience
  • Expertise in applied biotechnology techniques relevant to early cancer detection, and in one of our focus areas: early detection technology, risk stratification, population health and prevention, prognosis assessment, and early therapeutics
