The Department of Earth Sciences, School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, seeks applications for a faculty position at the rank of Assistant Researcher (R-3) in the field of Planetary Petrology.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Textural and chemical analysis of precious NASA-Apollo samples by optical petrography and Electron Probe Micro Analyzer (EPMA)
2. Execute high-temperature experiments at controlled atmosphere and pressure conditions using laboratory apparatus (gas-mixing furnace, piston-cylinder, internally-heated pressure vessel)
3. Develop algorithms for diffusion chronometry and apply them to natural and synthetic materials.
4. Prepare manuscripts for publication.
5. Present results at national and international scientific conferences.
6. Write proposals for future support.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. A doctorate from a college or university of recognized standing in Planetary Petrology.
2. Ability to generate independent research reports, publications and grant proposals
3. Ability to interact effectively with students and/or assistants when appropriate
4. Interest, initiative in scientific work, and adaptability.
5. Ability to publish scientific papers demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications, including first-authored publications.
6. Strong oral and written communication skills.
7. Experience independently operating the EPMA.
8. Demonstrated excellence in computer programming.

1. Team building abilities and strong interpersonal skills
2. Experience handling sensitive devices and equipment
