JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Penn State has a fully-funded Assistant Research Professor position available in the field of in-situ S/TEM study of beam-sensitive materials, including 2D materials, and organic perovskites. The position is partly in the NSF-funded center for 2DCC-MIP (one of the two national-wide centers that focus on the synthesis and characterization of novel 2D materials and their heterostructures).
This project will investigate the electronic and atom structure of beam-sensitive materials including their defect structure using advanced S/TEM imaging and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) techniques. This project is part of an extensive national and international team effort from the microscopy, synthesis, and theory communities. For this project, the candidate will be primarily using a state-of-the-art aberration-corrected ultra-high resolution Titan3 microscope (including probe and image corrected and equipped with a monochromator). The candidate will also have access to a wide range of in-situ TEM holders (heating, electrical biasing, gas, and liquid holders), as well as 4D STEM capabilities, which will open a wide range of scientific ideas including understanding the material's structure, as well as its evolution under in situ conditions. Penn State offers Cryo and Room Temperature Focused ion beam, Scanning electron microscopy, low-temperature photoluminescence and Raman, etc. as well as the nanofabrication facility located within the Millennium Science Complex at Penn State for device fabrication.
We are looking for a highly motivated, self-driven, collaborative, skilled young microscopist with a Ph.D. in Materials science, physics, chemistry, or a related field that has a thorough background in aberration-corrected (scanning) transmission electron microscopy, preferably including in-situ scanning/transmission electron microscopy, advanced image analysis and programming (e.g., scripting in Digital Micrograph, Matlab/Python).
This full-time position is available as early as January 15, 2024, for a period of one year with the option to renew for up to three years subject to good performance. Candidates with the stated background and research skills are highly encouraged to apply and include with their application a cover letter and CV. For inquiries about the position, please contact Dr. Nasim Alem at nua10@psu.edu .
The Pennsylvania State University's College of Earth and Mineral Sciences takes an active role in building a talented, inclusive, and culturally competent workforce. We understand that our shared future is guided by basic principles of fairness, mutual respect, and commitment to each other. Applicants should provide evidence, either woven through their application materials or as a separate diversity statement, of a commitment to fostering diversity, equity, inclusive excellence, and belonging and of engagement which creates an inclusive environment in their department/workplace.
CAMPUS SECURITY CRIME STATISTICS:
Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act and the Pennsylvania Act of 1988, Penn State publishes a combined Annual Security and Annual Fire Safety Report (ASR). The ASR includes crime statistics and institutional policies concerning campus security, such as those concerning alcohol and drug use, crime prevention, the reporting of crimes, sexual assault, and other matters. The ASR is available for review here.
Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies.
